4.0 out of 5 stars Representin from DC to QC, Mad Skillz does VA proud!!, March 25, 1999
By A Customer
I bought this album when it was first released and without question this is a solid debut for Mad Skillz. The Richmond, Virginia native's style represents the Mid Atlantic Region (the area from Washington D.C., Richmond, VA, Norfolk,VA, Raleigh,NC, to Charlotte NC - The Queen City better known as DC to QC).This region's hiphop, not southern enough to be fully "Dirty" or northern enough to be fully "East Coast" is a copycat of New York styled hip hop with southern flava. Through his collection of freestyle flows and battle rhymes, skillz illustrates the fundamentals of emceeing. The album starts of with a freestyle featuring fellow Richmonder, Lonnie B. Lines like "And I can keep rapping 'til Biz Markie gets Cute", gives a taste of what's yet to come. The track ends with what many Mid Atlantic MC's consider a compliment, to be mistaken to be from New York because of the level of one's lyrical skills(Well, New York is the holy city of Hip Hop). The album continues with the premise of establishing Virgina's underground hiphop. Overall, the album is tigh lyrically and has good beats and production. High lights are "The Nod Factor", "VA is in the House", "Move Ya Body", "Tongues of the Next S*@t", and the posse cut featuring all of the supafriends the "Unseen World". The rest of the album are solid cuts that showcase skillz verbal dexterity and dedication to hip hop. This album is definitely a good buy, even though New York, the West coast, and the rest of the dirty south may sleep on it, but those of us from DC to QC feels ya skillz, B.

4.0 out of 5 stars Representin VA well- Mad Skillz, March 24, 1999
By A Customer
First of all I bought this Album in '95 when Skillz first came out. Without question this is a solid album. To me it reflected the type of hip hop that best represents the mid atlantic region from DC to QC(Washington D.C. to the Queen City - Charlotte, NC). Not far enough south to be fully "Dirty", yet not far enough North to fully be "East Coast- New York". This type of hip hop is basically a copy of New York styles transplanted south. And that is what skillz does best, kicking fly battle rhymes and freestyles. The 1st track is an intro that shows the freestyle ability of skillz, also it illustrates what many MC's from the mid atlantic consider the highest compliment: To be mistaken for a New York MC because of one's rhyme skillz. The rest of the album continues on establishing underground VA HipHop. High lights of the album are "The Nod Factor", "VA is in the House", the posse cut featuring the Supafriends "The Unseen World", "Time in da cipher", "Extra Abstract Skillz" featuring Q'Tip and Large Professor and "Move Ya Body", All tight cuts. The rest of the album are solid songs with nice beats. No Doubt New York purists will sleep on the album as well as those from the West Coast and Dirty South, but the kids from Dc to QC feel ya skillz. F@#$ what ya heard, Skillz album is worth the purchase.
