From Library Journal
In this well-researched reference work, the author ( The Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities , Prometheus, 1990) examines the country's major cities (over 500,000 population) and presents and interprets economic data that will be of interest to young people seeking job opportunities and growth potential, as well as to older readers looking for a good retirement locale. Six tests are used in rating: economic momentum, future growth, opportunities in both business and real estate, availability of jobs, and equal opportunity. The author provides a narrative for each city, lending some depth to the statistics, but scores the cities solely on the basis of economic statistics, ignoring life-style aspects. Highly recommmended for public library collections. For a more general review of U.S. cities see the review of America's Top Rated Cities on p. 70.--Ed.
