Editorial Reviews

Review

"I commend Where Mercy Fails as required reading for all caring people who wish to understand this intractable problem and who want to give an informed moral response." --Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

"Where Mercy Fails is the best single account of that recent tragic history known to me. These pages document the battle between hope and despair in the lives of two and a half million people in that beleaguered region. To read it is to internalize that battle in one's own view of our common human nature. Don't read this book if all you want is more information about these atrocious crimes. Read it instead with determination to join the modern movement to banish genocide from human history. Read it knowing that in this cause we are in for a long haul." --Donald W. Shriver, Union Theological Seminary, New York, President Emeritus & Grawmeyer Religion Award Winner

Paul Jeffrey is well known in Methodist circles and I have had the privilege to hear him speak. He works around the world as a photo-journalist and with a number of humanitarian agencies. He spends his time chronicling the lives of people all over the world. His images alternately speak of life as vividly joyful and desperately heartbreaking. Somehow he manages to really capture true moments of life with the camera.

This book is truth-telling journalism. It seems designed to spell out the problem of displaced people in Darfur so as to get at the heart of the economic and social problems violence and displacement represent. The text is punctuated by many of Jeffrey's photographs that themselves tell the story. A captivating book written with intensity and first-hand knowledge of the subject matter.

In reading "Where Mercy Fails": Darfur's Struggle to Survive, I found the stastics were tiresome, and very boring. There were too few personal stories, and no facts for a true soulition to the problems. In gerneral it was a very hard book for me to read. I had chosen it because it was on a reading list recommended by my Church's women's reading program, in the hopes we could do a book review. Because I found it so hard to read, doing a group review was not possible.
