Book Description

September 8, 2009 4 and up
Mog is an uncharacteristically mild monster. He’s not scary, he likes kittens, and he’s quite...boring. When his parents get angry with him for being so mild, his bed transforms into an AMC Gremlin, and Mog takes off in search of adventure. He arrives in Dullsville, where he meets the dullest people imaginable—Vice President Gore, Martha Stewart, Bill Gates, and Jay Leno among them. Eventually he is consumed by boredom, and Mog heads back to his monster parents, never to be mild again! Timed to publish just weeks before the muchanticipated Where the Wild Things Are movie, this parody of a childhood classic is sure to be a hit with both fans and detractors of the original.

2.0 out of 5 stars Completely Misses The Mark, September 27, 2009
This review is from: Where the Mild Things Are: A Very Meek Parody (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Who is the intended audience for this book? WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE, A VERY MEEK PARODY, by Maurice Send-up and illustrated Bonnie Leick, has great potential to be very, very funny. However, this book is marketed as juvenile fiction, ostensibly for the same audience as the original WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. That being the case, WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE really misses the mark. The jokes - including the Cheap Gold Sticker award on the cover, the 1974 AMC Gremlin as the most dull car in the world, mild mannered Mog being bored into becoming a real monster by Martha Stewart, Bill Gates, Jay Leno, and Al Gore, the snide politically commentary, and a few jokes that are completely inappropriate for the younger crowd - are funny and understandable if you are 40, but not if you are four.

And if you ARE 40, the jokes in WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE simply aren't hard hitting enough. The humor brings on a smile and even a chuckle, but no out loud guffaws. In this parody, Mog end up in Dullsville, and that is pretty much where WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE stays.

On the bright side, the illustrations are colorful, fun, and very reminiscent of the original. Unfortunately, they are not enough to save WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE. Completely unintelligible for kids, and not funny enough for adults, I don't see how WHERE THE MILD THINGS ARE will ever find an audience. It was a great idea; too bad there was no follow through.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This was clearly published to take advantage of the hype surrounding the recent release of the "Where the Wild Things Are" movie. I'm a huge fan of the original book, but this book left me cold. The concept was kind of cute. But the illustrations are nowhere near as charming as the original's. Kids won't get the references in the text to the various famous "mild" people, and adults won' find it terribly entertaining.

An obvious parody of "Where the wild things are", this book presents things differently. T

he "mild things" of the book are various celebrities who are depicted as boring. Some include Bill Gates and Al Gore.

This book may be entertaining to some but is not one I am particularly fond of.
