The Northeast's old federal highways offer travelers an attractive alternative to the monotonous, overdeveloped scenery along the area's interstates and turnpikes. Along these roads one can find quaint college towns, interesting architecture, arts and crafts centers, and the eccentric charms of small-town life. The author guides the reader, describing points of interest and recounting historical anecdotes in a breezy, conversational style. Little is truly new, but it's all done in such a pleasant, unpretentious way that it makes fine reading for any visitor, or a resident seeking to learn more about the region.
