5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best movies about friendship
I first saw this movie when I was in third grade and it is still one of the most heartwarming movies I have ever seen. About a boy who, during the great depression, skrimped and saved to buy a pair of coon hounds. After he finally got them he raised them to become the best pair of coon hunters in the county. What the dogs do for him proves an unconditional friendship to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated version of a classic book
Where the Red Fern Grows was one of my favorite books as a kid and I watched this movie probably half a dozen times when it first came out. Coming back to it as an adult, some things hold up but problems are glaringly obvious.

On the plus side, I think the movie captures the period well. It's a great story and its essence comes through in the film version...

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent animal movie!, February 27, 2000

This review is from: Where the Red Fern Grows (DVD)
A heartfelt film about a boy and his passion for coon hunting. If how well the relationship between people and their pets should decide the value of a movie then this film is solid gold!Set in the 1930's it's realistic atmosphere, period and setting is so stunning, that it holds you to your seat from the start. Excellent acting, especially by James Whitmore and Stewart Peterson. Peterson, particularly, is extremely convincing as Billy. You would have to search long and hard to find as appealing a performance from one so young! In reviewing a film of this nature, you really have to judge the emotional level and how easily you are moved. Some animal movies (OLD YELLER, BORN FREE and others) move you to tears very easily. This is one of those films. Others seem to be strained to say the least. For more on that, see my review of the sequel to ....RED FERN GROWS. In any case, if you are looking for a film that can realistically take you to another time and place, tells a great story and does so in a very moving way, this film is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars DON'T MISS OUT OF THIS GREAT CLASSIC!, March 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Where The Red Fern Grows [VHS] (VHS Tape)
THIS IS A WONDERFUL MOVIE ABOUT DEDICATION,FAITHFULNESS,LOVE,AND HARD WORK. MY DAD WAS VERY POOR AND HE WANTED A DOG BUT COULD NOT AFFORD ONE. HE DID ANY JOB HE COULD JUST LIKE BILLY AND FINALLY BOUGHT ONE. THE STORIES MY DAD TOLD ME OF HIS YOUTH IN THE HILLS OF TENN. ARE SO SIMILAR TO THIS STORY BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE BORN IN THE "HILLS" OR HUNT TO ENJOY THIS MOVIE! THIS MOVIE IS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A HEART AND LOVE FOR ANIMALS. THE ACTING IS EXCELLENT,THE STORY LINE FLOWS PERFECTLY AND THE FEELING YOU ARE LEFT WITH AFTER WATCHING THIS IS PRICELESS. IT IS A 100% FAMILY MOVIE AND THE KIDS WILL BE GLUED TO THE TV. A WARNING THOUGH YOU WILL BE CRYING IN THE END BUT YOU CANNOT MISS OUT ON THIS CLASSIC!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Where The Red Fern Grows [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It was a great movie for anyone who likes animals. The part I liked best was when Billy first got his dogs. I must say they were cute. I have read the book and the movie is true to the book. I also liked "Old Yeller" and "Savage Sam" but I liked "Where the Red Fern Grows" better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming classic from the 70s !, April 21, 2002

This is the poignant story of a young boy who learns the value of hard work in getting something you want badly,in this case some hound pups. This is a good, wholesome movie, free of profanity and loaded with old-fashioned values. However, most kids of today will probably be bored with this movie. Its a better movie for adults with corny, sentimental tastes like me! The scene at the end of one coon dog grieving over the injury and eventual death of the other dog attacked by a mountain lion makes me cry every time!

4.0 out of 5 stars I promised I would not cry, but I did!, October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Where The Red Fern Grows [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I had never heard of the movie before until my boyfriend brought it home one night for us to watch. He told me I would cry and I promised him I would not. Watching the passion the boy had for these two dogs was amazing and by the end of the movie I was attached to the boy and his dogs and I cried to say the least! For a while after that everytime my boyfriend would just meantion "Where the Red Fern Grows", I would cry. That was in 1991 and we have been married over 6 years now and I have never forgotten that movie. I think it is a classic and all who are tenderhearted should view it. Have lots of tissues on hand when you do.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping movie, June 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Where The Red Fern Grows [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Set in the thirty's, Red Fern centers around a boy named Billy who after two years, saves up money to buy coon hounds and names them Old Dan and Little Ann. A great movie{featuring music by Andy Williams} for young children. The book is espicially good. Unfortuantely, the sequel is a poor rancid excuse for a movie. Check it out!!! The ending will touch your heart!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, December 16, 1999
This review is from: Where the Red Fern Grows (DVD)
As a child, my favorite book was "As the Red Fern Grows" and this movie adaptation is very faithful to the book! It is as touching and heartfelt as Wilson Rawls intended for it to be. The simple joys experienced by this "Americana" family will touch your hearts!

5.0 out of 5 stars So good I wish I could give it 10 stars ! - by Damaris, June 20, 2003
A Kid's Review
Now after all the movies I saw I have to say that Where the Red Fern Grows was the BEST one.I have never seen anything like it before.I thought the movie was very strong. The movie had a lot of emotional parts in it.I thought the boy who played Billy was the kind of boy who always agreed with his dogs and who never gave up on them. Now I've been reading other people's review of the movie, and most of them wrote that the movie was bad because it was not the same as the book.Well, I thought they were wrong. There might be someone who didn't like the book, so they'd want to see the movie and if it was exactly the same as the book, they want to see the movie! I am Happy the way the movie is.The people who made the movie did a great job.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best "Man's Best Friend" Movies...Period!!!, October 12, 2005
This review is from: Where the Red Fern Grows (DVD)
Anyone who loves animals, and dogs in general, and hounds in particular will absolutely love this movie. This movie has no high tech props to speak of, only a simple country family with a boy who longs for his own hounds and ends up with two Redbone Coonhounds that he orders through his Grandfather. The boy's obvious love and the immediate bond he shares with the two hounds (lil' ann and big dan)is heartwarming, making for an incredibly enjoyable movie.

I will warn you, the ending will leave you sobbing and if any man, woman, or child seeing the whole movie is not completely moved to tears upon the ending of the movie, nothing will make that person cry.

In short I loved the movie and would put it up there with Walt Disney's "Old Yeller".
