Very Rare Electronic Score from Horner,
By snowleopard (Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Where the River Runs Black: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is possibly James Horner's rarest score (put to CD anyway, a score like The Dresser never existed anywhere), it's also unique in that it was done mostly in Horner's "Giorgio Moroder studio" as he used to call his armada of synthesizers. Horner has always dabbled in electronics, but to my knowledge, this is quite possibly the most synthesized score he has done.
Having said all that, Horner did a good job with the music, while it does have a certain late '80's electronic sound, it has several diverse cuts that are very nice to listen to, and unlike the complaints often leveled at him (fair or not) about repeating himself, this tact he took here shows again how diverse he can be. I'd give this CD five-stars for that, but because of it's synthesized nature may take some people off guard, I mostly recommend this to Horner fans, and for those of the curious (or collectors). I should point out that there are apparently two versions of this CD. The first is the original Varese Sarabande disk. This has the original cuts, and is extremely hard to find, with probably only 1000 of them ever pressed. There has since been a Korean knock-off. I don't know if this is a carbon digital copy of the original score or what, but beware if you see a version out there. Make sure it's the original Varese soundtrack to be safe.
