Book Description

August 15, 2008
When Susan agrees to a canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness with her estranged husband, she doesn't expect to paddle through moonlit white water while escaping a raging forest fire. Nor could she foresee the canoe capsizing, stranding her on the opposite side of the river. How will she survive? Her husband, David Brooks, thinks his wife has drowned but when he sees her alive he turns and runs in the opposite direction... why? Susan and David will struggle with nature and at times with each other and their memories. Two distinct viewpoints converging to a surprising climax.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Discussing the plot further would spoil the suspense, so suffice it to say that the journey to the end of the novel is never boring.
--Steve Weinberg, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Perfect for the beach or next to a roaring fire. As an experienced broadcast producer, I think this book would make an excellent movie script! --Dan Dillon, KMOV/Channel 4 St. Louis Broadcast Producer, Author of So Where Did You Go To High School?

A solidly written and well-structured thriller. That's no small achievement. --John Dalton, author of the acclaimed novel, Heaven Lake, Winner of the Barnes & Noble Discover Award

From the Author

The initial idea for Where the River Splits came from a news article and the perennial "what if" question. From there, I wrote a first draft, then another and over the course of about ten years, developed the novel. That's not to say I didn't write other things in between, just that I often take lots of time, and rewrite often, to get it right -- hopefully. And hopefully you will enjoy Where the River Splits, which alternates between male and female points of view, diverging at the beginning, changing during their time apart, then converging at the end. Since I love the outdoors, the geography of St. Louis, Missouri, Wyoming, Canada, California, and Mexico all play a significant role in Where the River Splits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery, Drama, Great Characters, March 10, 2009

One of those novels I look for, but rarely find. You don't just read it, you inhabit it--the characters, the locales, the marriage that is both complex and fragile. May's first book is one he should be proud of, a mystery, compelling you to press on, suspense building all the while thanks to fluid writing with generous details. WTRS will carry you effortlessly to the climax, and through the denouement, wanting more.

5.0 out of 5 stars And I always though rivers converged., November 28, 2009
This review is from: Where the River Splits (Paperback)
Ever wonder if the people who live next door are as ordinary as they seem? Here's a couple who aren't, or are they? You'll find yourself caring about them as though you know them, then they take you on an adventure to surprising places in both their minds and the world in which we all live. Who among us hasn't thrown away something we'd grown tired of, then discovered we really needed it? Or at least thought we did. It becomes more complicated (and interesting) if it happens to be a relationship. You'll find yourself following these people with avid curiosity, but probably refraining from judging them because you may be a lot like them.

May's writing reminds me a litle of Walter Mosley's, kind of "street level", which touches you in a personal way and keeps you reading. Then when you've finished you've learned something about yourself and you want to read more of what he's written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Where the River Splits (Paperback)
I was fascinated by this book. The characters Jeffrey Penn May created were intriguingly complex, but I connected with them instantly, as though I had known them intimately for years.

The rapid story twists were weaved together seamlessly. Every time I thought I had the next plot development figured out, I was wrong, but not disappointed. As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said about this book, it is "never boring."

As an added bonus, I can already think of several friends and family members that would love to get Where The River Splits as a gift for the holidays!
