Book Description

November 13, 2008
Tamasin and her companion Rob set out with no real plan for the forthcoming year other than that each trip offers the possibility of perfection and discovery of something new. Whether investigating the food scene in San Francisco, sipping a cocktail in Venice, or walking down Sullivan St in New York to dine on fried chicken at the Blue Ribbon, they always set out in hope of the perfect dinner. They may find it at a small cafe in the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo in Piemonte, or snacking on falafel in a warm wad of pitta bread at Mamoun's, a hole in the wall in Greenwich Village. Sometimes they try too hard and don't find it at all, but even the disappointment is food for thought...and there is always tomorrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valentine for Cooks, January 31, 2008

This exquisitely written book would make a perfect Valentine's Day gift--even from you to you. I've long been a fan of Day-Lewis's cookbooks but this is more a tale of gastronomical adventures with supplemental recipes. Daughter of a poet-laureate, sister of the actor Daniel Day-Lewis, great friend of actress Julia Roberts, T D-L lives life -- whether cooking in the kitchen, hiking in the mountains, racing through the streets of New York or seeking small restaurants in Venice--with captivating passsion and intelligence. "Where Shall We Go for Dinner?" is one of the loveliest -- and most love-filled -- books I've read in a long time.

This review is from: Where Shall We Go for Dinner? (Paperback)
I loved this book. Nobody writes about the pleasures of food as generously as Day-Lewis. Of course, this is so much more than a book about food. It is a travel journal crammed with family and friends, observations on people and places, and, of course, some excellent recipes. Day-Lewis is always thoughtful; her voice is original. I hope she will write another book along these lines.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect airplane reading for foodies, April 12, 2008
Where Shall We Go For Dinner? has it all: famous people, fabulous food, travel and romance. The story of the British author's romantic relationship with her American partner is interwoven with colourful family history, trenchant observations on food culture, and mouth-watering accounts of meals and tastings in North America and Europe, all of it served up with intelligence, love and wit. I wish a decent editor had gone over the book, though, and cleaned up the dreadful punctuation and dangling modifiers. Reading it was like eating a rich, smooth, flavourful spinach souffle, only to realise that the cook had forgotten to wash the grit off the spinach.
