Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–This charming story plays with the conventions of familiar nursery tales. When a glass of milk, a cuddle, and his favorite story don't help a little wolf fall asleep, he determines that what he needs is a teddy bear. Unfortunately his mother doesn't know where to get one and serenely sends him off with a picnic lunch to find out. He asks Wise Owl, who sends him off to ask the Three (not-so-little) Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. After dealing with their issues about Big Bad Wolves, the little wolf is on his way to Goldilocks, hoping she will know the answer when he bumps into a chubby old man with a flat tire. So he HUFFS and he PUFFS and fixes the tire. As a thank you, the bearded man promises him an answer to his question in the morning–and a teddy bear is delivered. With its lively, bold watercolors filled with humorous details, this tale is likely to be a storytime hit well beyond the Christmas season.–Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library END

"Where Teddy Bears Come From: A Christmas Bedtime Journey with One Adorable Little Wolf" is a charming Christmas story about Little Wolf's forest-wide search for a teddy bear to help him go to sleep at night. He is told by his mother to be back by bedtime, but his adventures take up his full day in the forest. Tired out by stereotype-denying arguments with the three pigs and Little Red Riding Hood, Little Wolf encounters a funny old man in a red suit with a truck and a flat tire. Little Wolf helps him by huffing and puffing until the tire is blown back up, and the man promises to give him the answer to his question in the morning, if he runs home immediately. Only a child can guess exactly what Little Wolf found for his surprise answer in the morning, after a very good night's sleep. "Where Teddy Bears Come From" is enriched by playful, whimsical, colorful, full page artworks that express the innocence and freshness of the world of Little Wolf. "Where Teddy Bears Come From" is designed to appeal to children ages 4-8.

This is a refreshing holiday tale of a little gray wolf who can't sleep and his search for a teddy bear to help him with his insomnia. Mama wolf packs a lunch for his expedition where he seeks advice from Wise Owl who quickly sends him on his way. In a cheeky nod to the fairy tale classics, he encounters the Three Pigs (who aren't so little anymore) and Little Red Riding Hood who all at first mistake him as the Big Bad Wolf. No one seems to know where teddy bears come from and little wolf becomes discouraged.

He then meets up with a bearded old man in a red suit who wishes the little wolf was indeed the big bad wolf as he needs help inflating a flat tire. Little wolfe kindly obliges with some huffing and puffing and then asks the man if he knows where teddy bears come from. The man assures him he will soon find out--which he does by the end of the book.

The illustrations are modern and colorful, the prose is fun to read out loud and it's full of personality. It really stands out amongst Christmas books and I recommend it.

Where Teddy Bears Come From is a delightfully quirky take on several fairy tales but also Santa Claus. The illustrations and text fonts remind me distinctly of Lauren Child's style, but take on a life of their own. The little wolf is quite adorable as he persistently searches for the answer to his question. A fun book to read aloud as the differently sized text prompts the reader into reading with expression and verve. The twists to the fairy tales of the Three Little Pigs (who aren't so little and are female), and Little Red Riding Hood (who is really quite cranky) add a nice humorous touch to the story. It's also fun to wait and see if the reader can figure out that the old guy with the truck that the little wolf stops to help is Santa Claus. Recommended.
