I was looking for this book and noted the 2nd review, that rates the book as 1-star simply because it was not available.

I'm an American and I've lived abroad for more than 18 years and I must say that our family copy of the book has lost the cover from much use. The book is practical and very easy to understand. We used Where There is No Doctor: Village Health Care Handbook for Africa most while living living in a then homeland of South Africa. My daughter and family are now in Kenya and I'm going to buy them a copy even though they are in Nairobi.

Again, may I repeat, this book is practical and easy to understand and I do hope my 5* rating will help folks from NOT to be steered away from purchasing this book. There are so many simple treatments, for example, for diarrhea and dehydration. I was able to share that information alone to help local friends. I had not known about this simple treatment prior to looking it up in this book. If you are planning a move to a Third World country, please take this book with you.

This is a GREAT book to have if you are going abroad to a third world country to work as a nurse, physician or just to live abroad. It has so many helpful tips, recipes, make-do remedies and tools that you can treat or survive just about anything. I gave it to a surgeon who spent a lot of time working in Africa. He'd not heard of it until I gave it to him. I've put it to use during my work abroad and now he has, too.

Don't leave the USA without it!!

We have used this book time and time again. The pages and illustrations are very helpful to us as we live in a country where English is possibly the 3rd language used. Going to the Dr in countries like this even for people who are not serving the community in the medical field, can be a bear. Thanks to this book, many of our fears have been put to rest as we have used the principles therein to educate ourselves on the necessary health care in 3rd world countries.
