5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book that hooked me on John Gierach, October 2, 1998
It all started with this book as a gift -- John's stories are addictive and now I own all of John's works (save, "Signs of Life"). If you enjoy well-crafted short stories, you will not be disapointed with this work.

4.0 out of 5 stars The secret places to fish., February 19, 2007
We who fish have all heard of these places. The Secrets, the holes where civilisation didn't spoil the fish, and the fish are wild. Or, if originally stocked, been living the free life long enough to be close to wild. Yet again Gierach proves that his writing, although deeply personal, never becomes private and that his choice of subject - matter touches everybody with just a passing knowledge of fishing. His books are about life first and the fish second or are these to inseperable to him?

This review is from: Where the Trout are All as Long as Your Leg (Hardcover)
i recently received this book and it is an easy and enjoyable read. Gierach has a way with words and when put in the context of fly fishing makes for a fun read. Makes one think too!

4.0 out of 5 stars If only the story were as long, I would have been happy., August 23, 2010

I love this guy's writing, I really do. I mean who else could make you wish you were up in some frozen creek fly-fishing in the middle of winter. However, this book was far too short. Seriously, I have seen pamphlets from the government that were almost as large as this book, and this a shame as the quality of the writing is as good as ever. It lead me to wonder if he was drying out, or just broke. I mean why would some with such a good track record release something of such reduced quality compared to their previous work? Maybe the editors or publisher pushed him into it, but it was not appreciated by me. Anyway, its just a little short, but the writing is good. So get it if you have money to burn.

can't say enough about John G. I have every one but one hard to find early book....they are prized. It's just WAY to easy to be right there with him, AK, and others...
