4.0 out of 5 stars After listening to this....here is where you will want to be
This new cd from donnelll is the best to drop from him in a while. This is 3 times better than the first. Every song flows into the next as if they were all one....but they all have a different sound too. It's a good mix of live sounds with studio beats. U might as well press repeat when u play this because some of the beats and harmonies here will have u sining along...

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent effort
I bought this CD for the title track "Where I Wanna Be." I love everything about that song, the melody, the lyrics, the mood. I liked "U Know What's Up" well enough when it was released last year, but excessive radio rotation made me dislike it.

I've only listened to the entire CD straight through once and many of the songs do sound alike. Still,...

Every song flows into the next as if they were all one....but they all have a different sound too. It's a good mix of live sounds with studio beats. U might as well press repeat when u play this because some of the beats and harmonies here will have u sining along from start to finish. Left eye is the only guest here and thats enough. Sometimes all u want to hear is the artist whose name is on the cd. No one else. For his sophmore cd, he came strong. No slump here.

After U read this,....I think you might want to get to the nearest store and Get this!..(or just order online).

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Many good songs, November 13, 2005

I have this CD and the one that came out afterwards and I must say this is still my all time favorite. Donnell Jones has a very nice voice there is a nice variety on this CD Ballads, Dance tunes and just plain "chillin" music. A nice CD to just have playing as background music if you have family over, good use of the individual instruments in at least 3 of the songs on the CD. Overall a REALLY great buy.

If you like his style of music I would also suggest Case, Joe and even Jon B.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4-1/2 stars, April 6, 2002
This review is from: Where I Wanna Be (Audio CD)
At the 2000 American Music Awards, a certain someone won an award for Best Male R&B Artist...that someone was Donell Jones. After that a lot of people were like, WHO? Donell was very deserving for the award, because Where I Wanna Be is one of the best things I've ever heard.

He was really on top of his game with the first single "U Know What's Up". It's so simple, but so catchy. Then he followed up with the best song on the album, the title track. Here is where he ponders whether or not he wants a relationship. It may not sound like much on paper, but you have to hear the way he says it.

Other gems on the album are the funky "This Luv" (which was also released, but few people knew about it), "It's Alright" and "When I Was Down". "Have You Seen Her" reminds us of those times when we caught a glimpse of an attractive person real fast and never saw them again, and "Pushin'" drives the point home that there's a difference between being loved and being smothered.

It's a little hard to tell where he's going in the skit at the end of "Think About It", but you know where this ALBUM should be going? Straight into your CD player.

This CD surprised me alot. I bought it just for "You know what's up" but I got much more than I expected. In a time when you buy CD's and hold your breath to see if you wasted your money, Where I wanna be sets it self apart from the field. No stupid little skits after every track and no swearing while "keeping it real" verbally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and very professional work!, May 20, 2000

I waited for this album for a long time, and when I finally got it... I thought it was a classy, soulful and good r&b/soul album with a personal Donell twist! Okay, I love the album, so but why did I rate it worth only four stars? Well, don't get me wrong, the tracks are great, but most of them are pretty much alike. The same tempo, same beat and even the lyrics are about same things. I would've liked to hear more different kinds of track on this album (perhaps more funky or more jazzy tracks inc. more harmonies), so I'm a little disappointed because of that. But hey, Donell has his own unique style in songwriting and performing...and that's how it should be! ...But I love Donell! His voice is so soft and deep and he can groove into anyone's hearth with his soulful and melodic rhymes. His voice has the sweetness and power of Stevie Wonders voice, but it has his own personal swing in it. My fav tracks are: where I wanna be, shorty, have you seen her, and (of course) you know what's up! I advice you to check this album out! It's very well worth the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars This cd is a job well done!, November 18, 1999
This review is from: Where I Wanna Be (Audio CD)
This cd is one that must be added to every cd collection. You can listen to every song on this cd without having to skip to the next track. I am glad that I made the investment. At first I just bought it for that one song everyone likes which is U KNOW WHATS UP, but after listening to the others. I must say I am pleased.

First of all Let me say reading some of these reviews.. Every one has the right to their opinion of any releases.. Ex: MisterMaxx.. He does have that right to express his opinion.. no matter the masses agreed with it or not..

Now for this album .. i had it for a while just gettin around to giving my review for it ..All i can say Donell is going to be a force in the music business to come.. Tight production, smooth grooves makes this cd great listening.. He has a voice that is indeed refreshing to hear in music right now instead of copying some one else style ..

Fav.. Cuts

You know What's Up

Shorty ( Got her eyes on me)

Think About it

Pushing

Where I wanna Be

All the other cuts are tight also.. future looks bright for this brother .. Pick it up

now im not an R&B fan by any stretch of the imagination. But dam donell jones tears it up. this album is sooooo off the hook i love it. "Shorty got her eyes on me" and "Where I wanna be" are so great. this cd would be triple platinum even without the other 11 tracks. Other great tracks include, "This Love", "All her love", "Pushin', I Wanna Love U, and "It's Alright". i can still put this cd in my car and bump it on the road. R Kelly and Case are my other favorite R&B artists and i would love to see these 3 do a track together. hopefully donell continues makin hott songs and hott albums after this one and "Life Goes On''.

Like most people, I think my purchase was solely for the danceable 'You know what's up'.... and excessive airplay wore on me quickly

But I used the SHUFFLE feature on my CD player, and found that each track has a special quality. The lyrics are wonderful.

For the first time in a long time, I could listen to the music, and not feel the need to apologize to my elders, or myself, for the mysogynistics lyrics that are often the price of good music. For the first time in a long time, I could understand what was being said... not just the words, but the emotions.

The vocal quality of Donell Jones is in many ways like the Early 70's version of Stevie Wonder, and the late 60's version of Donny Hathaway. Still, he has his own sound.

I made my purchase of this CD because the single of that track was not available. Now, I'm grateful to have the entire album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sincere and Sentimental, July 7, 2000
This review is from: Where I Wanna Be (Audio CD)
Donell Jones is truly one of the most original R&B artists out there. This album proves just that. Songs like Where I Wanna Be and Shorty are so true you swear he was listening in on your love life. However, this CD falls into a slump because the songs all begin to favor one another. There's no change from upbeat to ballad. They all sound like they're somewhere in between. Definitely a good CD for night time listening and contemplating
