Really Good, Just a Different Style.,
By
This review is from: Where We Stand (Audio CD)
This album is really good, but its not your typical Yellowcard. If you are getting this, looking for something like Ocean Avenue, your not getting it. This album has Yellowcard's old singer, Ben Dobson who has a completly different sound than Ryan Key. He sounds a little bit like Fat Mike from NoFX. So its not really as pop-punk as there other CDs, but it is good. Try it.

I must say that this is a totally different sound than the current Yellowcard but it's for a good reason. This was when the band consisted of Ben Dobson on vocals, Todd Clary on vocals and guitar, Ben Harper on guitar, Sean Mackin(goes by Wellman on this album) on violin, LP Parsons III on drums, and Warren Cooke on bass. For many of you, 3 of those names are foreign. When Ben D. and Todd left the band, Ryan joined and that was the band until Warren left after making the Underdog EP. But back to the main purpose of this. This album is alot different from what you maybe be used to hearing from Yellowcard. The music is harder. It's not as upbeat as their albums once Ryan joined the band in 2000. But for it's category or being a hard rock kind of album, it's a great album. I'd recommend for you to get it. It is also a great album to have because it shows a measurement of how far they have came since 1998. They were amazing then, and even more amazing now.

The Original Yellowcard,
By
This review is from: Where We Stand (Audio CD)
To understand this album, you have to understand that this is not the "Ocean Avenue" Yellowcard. Though they may share many of the same members and the same name, the band you will hear on this album is miles away from the Yellowcard known to people by Ocean Avenue.
This was originally released several years before "One For the Kids," the modern Yellowcard's "debut," if you will. When this was released, Yellowcard was a very talented punk rock band. Too many reviews either say this is a bad album, or the newer ones are. It is simply important to realize that you are not truly talking about the same band. I personally prefer the way they are on this album, but I also liked One For the Kids for what it was (I wasn't a big fan of Ocean Avenue, but that's just how it goes sometimes). So please understand: on this album, you will hear Yellowcard as they were in the late 90s: one of the best punk rock bands around. They had a lot of heart, a lot of energy, and very good lyrics. But as I've seen suggested, I would also suggest checking out the samples on this page to be sure this is really the type of music you're looking for. If you are a fan of Yellowcard's more recent releases, this may not be for you. On the other hand, whether or not you like their newer music, if you like bands like The Vandals, Screeching Weasel, The Lookouts, the Descendents, or other fast-paced punk, you may want to check this one out.

FOR EVERYONE'S INFORMATION,

For everyone that LOVES yellowcard now b/c of Ocean Ave., and for everyone that CLAIMS to have been down for so long, then maybe you would know that this was not one for the 4 cds that they have, but one of the 6...this is a good cd, but by far the worst yellowcard cd. i love the cd, but it does not compare to 'midget tossing' or 'still standing' the 2 EPs that they had after this. then they got signed and came out w/ 'one for the kids' 'the underdog EP' and the of course the famed 'Ocean Ave.'. I have every single yellowcard cd, and this one is the worst, but still one of my fav. cds. i would recomend it to anyone.

The early years,

As an owner of all four Yellowcard albums, I have to say that this one is definitely the most different - that can be attributed to the lack of guitarist and lead singer Ryan Key (who is the key writer on the other three albums) and the presence of three other members who have long since been absent from the band. Now that I've said that, I still have to agree that this album is pretty awesome - just a tad bit more `hardcore rock' than their others. It is definitely a different sound, but with LP still on drums, Ben on guitar and Sean still rocking out on violin you can't help but love it. My only warning though is to not base your idea of Yellowcard on this album - since it's release, the band has gone numerous changes and a totally different sound. Die hard YC fans: go ahead and get it, you know you're going to eventually!!! And who can resist early high-school recordings of the most AWESOME band around?!

Rockin' out to old school...,

Recommended for the true YC fan, this album rocks out like no other. With a harder, more edgy vibe, "Were We Stand" is a great album that kicks off Yellowcards earlier high school days, long before the punkish waves of songs like "Way Away" and "Breathing." Songs such as "Lesson Learned," "Uphill Both Ways," and "On the Brink" exhibit Yellowcard's true passion for the music, apparent even in their early days. A great album to listen to for letting off some steam!

This is what Yellowcard should've stayed as!,

...of course, money is the ruling factor of everything, so if they had stood wtih this type of rock, then they might have just stayed more underground-ish.
This is the Yellowcard that I miss very much. Ben Dobson had "the voice" that made it unique and very different from regular punk rock bands. Their ability to mix super good guitar riffs with violin solos and energetic vocals is just outstanding in itself. Taking that characteristic, Ryan Key easily turned this band from a super energetic punk rock band to "MTV sellouts" (coming from a person that does not like MTV that much). About every song on this album is flowing with energy and just plain goodness. People who have been introduced to Yellowcard with Ocean Avenue WILL notice a HUGE difference between the current Yellowcard lineup and this one, hence the negative reviews. It's sad that Yellowcard has changed. At least they have their older albums to be remembered by.

Ocean Avenue is better,
By
This review is from: Where We Stand (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of the current Yellowcard line-up. When I heard this CD (which was after I already owned Ocean Avenue) I didnt even recognize the music. I looked up some things about "Where We Stand" to see what made it so different. I found that the singer of the current Yellowcard, Ryan Key, was not part of the band at the time. The old singer, Todd Clary, did not have anywhere near as good of a voice as Ryan does. The beat of the guitar and drum parts also did not seem to even match up with the vocals, making the songs sound very amateur and making the band sound not very put together. Sean Mackin's violin parts, which I think are one of the things that makes Yellowcard so unique, weren't really involoved in the songs the way they are now. I also think Ryan key's lyrics are better than those of Todd Clary, whose were less meaningful and more like an average high school garage band's. It may just be me, but I did not enjoy this cd as much as I did Ocean Avenue.
