Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Clinical psychologist Drew offers a seven-step program directed at men and women whose fathers were absent, abusive, overly judgmental, or emotionally withdrawn. Taking examples from her life and the experiences of her clients, Drew uses techniques familiar to those acquainted with the recovery movement (e.g., visualization, writing, and drawing with the nondominant hand) to guide the reader in assessing and understanding the father's role. She discusses letting go of anger, laying the foundation for healing, and building healthy future relationships. A final chapter includes advice for friends and partners. The book is delightfully illustrated and easy to read, although a section examining cultural differences in fathering would have given the book wider appeal. Recommended for public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first book that helped!, April 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad?: A Guide for Healing Your Father Wound (Paperback)
I've been through years of Adult Children of Alcoholics, writing groups, private counseling and more. I've read every self-help book there is. This is the FIRST BOOK that dealt perfectly with my love-hate relationship with my Dad. It was so direct and targeted it was scary. And because it is a workbook, you must DO the exercises to get the benefit. And while painful, they were very revealing.

My best advice is that you get a counselor/therapist/objective friend to listen to you and make sure you complete all the exercises.

This author is a godsend. She has lived through and healed her father wounds

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Work, April 28, 1999
This review is from: Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad?: A Guide for Healing Your Father Wound (Paperback)
Jane Drew is a brilliant author with great insight into this area. Many of us missed out on having a father who was there when we needed him... in the way that we needed him. This book is about addressing that wound and moving forward. --Frank Boyd

5.0 out of 5 stars where were you when i needed you, dad?, June 14, 2004

i absolutely loved this book. having read so many self improvement books, i can honestly say this one is the most well written and relatable of its kind. the excercises are an incredible release and in many ways a cleansing of "father wounds." i cant think of a person/author more qualified in the healing of a father wound than one who has healed and learned to cope with one of her own.
