5.0 out of 5 stars The first book that helped!
I've been through years of Adult Children of Alcoholics, writing groups, private counseling and more. I've read every self-help book there is. This is the FIRST BOOK that dealt perfectly with my love-hate relationship with my Dad. It was so direct and targeted it was scary. And because it is a workbook, you must DO the exercises to get the benefit. And while...

1.0 out of 5 stars Many judgmental assumptions.
At first glance, this book seemed to be exactly what I needed. However, the author's assumption that a bad father equals a bad impression of god, or even the rejection of a god, is her own belief. While spirituality has its place in our lives, not everyone turns to organized religion for their answers. Drew should learn to keep her religious beliefs out of writing that...

This review is from: Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad?: A Guide for Healing Your Father Wound (Paperback)
And while painful, they were very revealing.

My best advice is that you get a counselor/therapist/objective friend to listen to you and make sure you complete all the exercises.

This author is a godsend. She has lived through and healed her father wounds

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Work, April 28, 1999
This review is from: Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad?: A Guide for Healing Your Father Wound (Paperback)
Jane Drew is a brilliant author with great insight into this area. Many of us missed out on having a father who was there when we needed him... in the way that we needed him. This book is about addressing that wound and moving forward. --Frank Boyd

i absolutely loved this book. having read so many self improvement books, i can honestly say this one is the most well written and relatable of its kind. the excercises are an incredible release and in many ways a cleansing of "father wounds." i cant think of a person/author more qualified in the healing of a father wound than one who has healed and learned to cope with one of her own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, May 28, 2008
As a therapist in private practice, I have used Dr. Drew's book to augment my sessions with clients who struggle with father issues. It has provided clinically sound guidance with sensitivity and care. The structure of the exercises provides a concrete way to access abstract concepts and emotions in a way that is non-threatening. Used in conjunction with therapy, I believe the book has made my interventions more effective and focused. It is a very beneficial and valuable resource for clinicians and clients alike. I highly recommend this book and thank the author for the difference she has made in the lives of so many people through her work.

While spirituality has its place in our lives, not everyone turns to organized religion for their answers. Drew should learn to keep her religious beliefs out of writing that appears to be research-based and academic. I will pass the book along to someone else, if I don't simply return it.

5.0 out of 5 stars reciprocal usefulness ..., August 21, 2009
This review is from: Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad?: A Guide for Healing Your Father Wound (Paperback)
Thanks to "Many judgmental assumption.."'s review ... for which I marked as useful, I invested in this book, and applied it's thorough "work" to my life. Sometimes that work was tough, other times I wanted to cry, others I wanted to deny. It was all worth while and started me on the path to a loving wholeness.

I'm coming to the conclusion that spirituality is a word that has many responses. Reading this book has helped me keep my knee steady rather than jerking it and pointing my finger at those who MISrepresented God (mainly those who are in the Christian Church but yet do not know "The Father's love"). The most spiritual of response is that of accepting God's love (motherly, yes, but especially fatherly ) in order to give and receive others love. It goes even higher than the law of reciprocity.

I trust that "judgmental assumptions" has had the opportunity to reread the book since the last 8 years. I intend to keep it and reread it to see how much I've grown since the last time I read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource!, February 17, 2009
I found this workbook at my library when I was doing some counseling for anxiety. It really helped me to focus on certain aspects of my relationship with my dad as I tried to understand the past. I feel like it made my time with the counselor more productive as I reported back my experiences from the excercises Dr. Drew outlines.
