Book Description

6 and up1 and up
Moving overseas presents a special set of challenges to children. To help with the transition,Judith M. Blohm, cross-cultural trainer and educator, has created Where in the World Are You Going?, an entertaining book that is used by major relocation companies all over the world for children ages five to ten to make a move overseas more manageable. This fun-to-use book is filled with activities and lively drawings designed to engage and delight young readers. Blohm makes a point to explore what's on children's minds: what they are worried and excited about, what they think will be different in the new country, and ways they can help their families as they get ready for the move. The author includes practical suggestions such as how best to stay in touch with friends and relatives. Perhaps the most challenging concept involves cultural differences, and Blohm tackles this head-on. Through a series of simple examples, she captures the essence of cultural differences in a non-threatening manner that will stimulate children to learn more and ultimately embrace the differences they encounter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for expatriates relocating kids, August 23, 2007

This review is from: Where in the World Are You Going? (Paperback)
I received this book out of the blue from our Global Mobility people who are co-ordinating my relocation from Australia to the UK. It's been well received by my kids who have enjoyed working through it.

The process it follows feels right, and though there were no new concepts (we had talked about many of the issues it raises with our kids), it does present them in a clear and organised way that makes it worthwhile.

Although I was given this book, I've since recommended it to several people. My biggest advice is get more than one! You'll need one for each kid to avoid arguments, although we dealt with that by "sharing" pages.

My only criticisms are that it does feel a little old fashioned, so doesn't really acknowledge much in the way of modern technology which would form a useful update to the book, particularly if you were using it with older children.

For reference, my kids are currently 5 and 6.
