We checked this book out of the library for son, who will soon be three years old, and it is now one of his all-time favorite books. I just dropped into Amazon.com to order him a copy of the book for his very own.
There are almost no words in the book, just enough to help you figure out what's going on. You and your child provide your own story as you turn the pages. My son can tell the whole story himself now and gets very excited as we get closer and closer to the page where the bear appears. He really thinks he's "reading" and asks for this book again and again.

My toddler (now 5T), is in love with this book, too. And my previous toddler loved it as well! I am surprised that it is not a classic among wee folk. Just like the other reviewer stated there are few words: "Where, where's the bear, there, there's the bear", and you can fill in lots of details yourselves (dialogue bits, colors, jobs, skin colors, tools, animals, emotions, in/out). A villager sees a bear in the woods, and alerts the others. They go to check out the situation, and suspense is in the air. The just-scary-enough bear is perfect, as is the end. Short, yet fun.
