I read this kind of a book VERY reluctantly.

It was interesting to learn that a therapist is able to help her patients while having her own human feelings.

I read this book the first time from end to end in one go and couldn't put it down. I then went back and re-read it. Dr. Luiz tells these tales in a way that draws you in, seeking to understand the motivations underlying them. You end up feeling that you are by her side as she explores each situation. I found that I ended up wanting to get a complete understanding of what motivated the character in each of her tales.

Despite the call for increased mental health services and treatment, what goes on behind the doors of a therapist's office is still a mystery to many.

With her stories, Dr. Luiz has opened the doors a crack to give us a peek. But, unlike the "voyeurism for entertainment" model employed by reality TV shows, this is voyeurism with a purpose. Her fictional patients are us; the frustrations and disappointments and anxieties they feel are ours as well.

But the maladies her patients suffer, however familiar, are to an extent beside the point. It's the process she wants us to understand.

As Dr. Luiz explains it, it's as simple as having a conversation. Because when we talk, much like when we write, a funny thing happens. Our façade starts to melt away, and we begin to tell the truth about what's going on with us.

Her "new method for change" is to allow ourselves to simply experience that which we normally push away from us. Because when we're honest, transformation happens. And it has relevance not just behind the closed doors of hers or any therapist's office, but in our daily lives as well.

Dr. Luiz offers, in a most honest and profound way, the essence of personal struggle and eventual transformation of several fictional patients in these illuminating vignettes. Not only does Dr. Luiz discuss the therapeutic approaches she utilized but offers honest self disclosures about her own position as the ideal ( if complete detachment and neutrality were ever humanly possible ) detached and objective analyst. From my view as a health care professional I identified with the constant need to use oneself ( and one's feelings, reactions, and biases ) in the therapeutic relationship so that you enhance and maximize the therapeutic process. Dr. Luiz's patients represent a cross section from many walks of life. When reading this wonderful book keep two perspectives simultaneously within your reach to fully benefit from the layers of insight offered- the patient's view, and the therapist's own professional dilemmas.

The gift of self acceptance is Dr. Luiz's message. Start where you are, accept your current situation emotionally but allow yourself to grow. Let insight unfold by searching for challenging and nourishing experiences. You will get where you are meant to be, in your own time, and she will help you every step of the way.

Dr. Luiz presents case vignettes that can speak to both lay and professional audiences in an easily digestible yet powerful and insightful narrative.

She conveys a wealth of emotional and clinical understanding, reflecting an accomplished synthesis of the art and skill of psychoanalysis.

I highly recommend it!

This author's direct and straightforward language describing the problems encountered in her patients is both engaging and sensible on all levels. Observations and interpretations are easily understood by the reader, and there is never a hint of condescension on the author's part. Warmly recommended.

Boston author and analyst Dr. Claudia Sheftel-Luiz come to this brief but pungent book with a shelf of credentials that is bowing form the weight of her background. Not only has she been in a highly respected clinical practice for over 25 years, but she also is a writer for numerous publications. The nine cases she puts together her are composites of multiple cases she has treated - only the diagnosis is real - but ht e way she presents these cases is not only entertaining - it is also illuminating and serves as a mirror for us the reader in which to relate.

Using these nine clinical experiences she constructs a path toward sanity. `WHERE'S MY SANITY takes you where you need to go before you can make a change. Because what leads to sanity, when all reason fails, is this: emotional experiences. Not ideas. But emotional experiences. In WHERE'S MY SANITY you'll read nine short stories where I'll show you the emotional experiences that have been most effective for my patients and for me. And then, you can start searching for powerful emotional experiences yourself.'

Her nine stories include Catrina who is stressing herself out and spiraling into depression. You'll learn what helps restore her balance, Terrell and Rosalia, after seven years of marriage, are totally frustrated with each other. Their sex-life has gone to pot. How are they going to get intimate again?, John J a womanizer, whose life is unraveling. What will it take to convince him that he needs help?
