Wherever I Lay My Hat: Best of Paul Young

There pretty much isn't a single `hit' missing from this collection, especially for US listeners, considering Paul wasn't a major hit maker here. What makes this compilation significant is the handful of extended versions--Iron Out The Rough Spots, Come Back and Stay, Love of the Common People, and the 9 minute `special extended mix' of I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down (as opposed to the 6:15 remix by John Potoker, known as the Ya Ya mix on 12" vinyl). However, this last is the only that hasn't been on CD before, since all the others were on the import version of No Parlez, replacing the original album versions rather than being utilized as bonus tracks. Another odd thing to note is that, while this 2 disc package found room for these 12" versions, in a few cases, the powers that be opted to use the short radio versions of songs instead of the full length album versions. Go figure. The most logical move now would be to just either rerelease all of Paul's catalog with the 12" versions as bonus tracks on each disc, or make one disc featuring JUST the 12" mixes so all his 12" mixes will be available on CD at last.

The music of Paul Young has been a recent find of mine.Here is an artist who sings like the rest of us wish we could. Fluent, melodic and passionate (?)
He ranks with Cocker, Chrissie McVie and Russell Morris (Aust.) etc who can "sing a song"and drag you into it with ease.

Every song on these two CD's were great. It's rare for me to be so happy about an entire CD. But, I really got lucky with these two. I am so glad I bought "Wherever I Lay My Hat: Best of Paul Young".
