Editorial Reviews

2009 sophomore album from the UK Pop/Rockers. Recorded at Monnow Valley studios in Wales during the summer of 2008 the album was produced by the acclaimed Owen Morris, who worked on their platinum selling debut album Hats Off To The Buskers. Which Bitch? sees the View at their most ambitious yet. Still imbued with the band's un-canny ability to write a cracking tune, the album delves further featuring the sweeping orchestration of 'Distant Doubloon', scored by Oliver Kraus and recorded in New York, and 'Covers', a beautiful heart-felt song featuring a guest vocal from Paolo Nutini while tracks such as 'Temptation Dice', 'Shock Horror' and '5Rebbeccas' all recall the raucous spirit of the band. Sony/BMG.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun, and heart too!, July 18, 2009
By
This review is from: Which Bitch? (Audio CD)
The View open their sophomore CD "Which bitch" having fun on an accordion ("Typical time 2") before the thumping beats and buzzing guitars of the bouncy "5Rebbeccas" announce their return proper. Their sound is similar to fellow Brits Fratellis or The Kooks, catchy fun-loving Brit Pop sung with pronounced British accents.

"One off pretender" is a groovy Rocker with spoken verses, a truly gorgeous song. Everything stands out, from the Fratellis-sounding "Temptation dice" (with nice chiming guitars), "Glass smash" (a choir-like intro leads into a blazing Smiths-style Rocker), the theatrical string ballad "Distant doubloon", the Rockabilly-style "Jimmy's crazy conspiracy", the beautiful horn-sprinkled acoustic ballad "Covers" (which features Paolo Nutini), the jangly "Double yellow lines" (with an incredibly groovy bassline), the sunny "Shock horror", the tender "Give back the sun" (which has a nice theatrical intro, and features Kim Falconer, sister of lead singer Kyle), to closing Folky acoustic ballad "Gem of a bird".

However, my absolute favourite is the haunting Oasis/Beatles-style ballad "Unexpected" with throbbing guitars, orchestral flourishes, and a gut wretching vocal delivery from Kyle Falconer, a tribute to his father whom he lost when he was 16 to cancer. "Cut out your pictures now I know that you are near. Tack them into the frame for now, as I know you won't be here" he sings. Incredibly moving and indescribably beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Which View, June 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Which Bitch? (Audio CD)
On first listen I was a little surprised and slightly disappointed. It definitely has some of the "typical" View sounds but it had a few surprises. Once I sat down in a room (and not in my car) with the lyrics sheets, I was amazed at how great this really was. The songwriter is a musical genious the way he can write such diverse songs and clever lyrics (that you have to read because he is a little hard to understand at times for us U.S. people). Britpop acts like the Kooks and somewhat the Fratellis really hit a second album slump but these guys came in with a winner. I even love the guy's voice.

3.0 out of 5 stars The View - Witch bitch?, May 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Which Bitch? (Audio CD)
This is my first The View album, I read a lot about them, was so curious because of their Mercury Awards nominations. it think it's great to be their second album and I feel they have a lot of room to grow and so many avenues to go. It has some great singles but I don't consider it as an strong full album. Recommended If You Like: The Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs, The Fratellis.
