Book Description

May 1, 2009
Unemployed and stuck caring for his invalid mother, Jackson Meek's unnamed protagonist is just biding his time. When a childhood friend named Travis asks him to help rob a fast food restaurant, he agrees-not because he's interested in making money but because he hopes that the inertia of his life will finally be broken. As the robbery goes terribly wrong, the nameless protagonist ushers readers into a nightmare journey on the lam. From the streets of Harlem to the small towns of West Virginia, While the Devil Waits presents a nihilistic view of America and humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gut Wrenching, May 11, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: While the Devil Waits (Paperback)
The character development...or deterioration sets Meeks apart as an incredible talent. From the outset, the reader identifies with the protagonist and remembers choices personally made or made by others that could have led down a similar path. It doesn't take long for the reader to try to distance himself from the initial association. It's only in Meeks' book that one realizes the totality of the terror, confusion and finally acceptance that could engulf any one of us based on a decision to try to improve things. The horror of events contrasts vividly with descriptions of the pastoral landscape of the escape route and seems to call attention to the simplicity of the protagonist. Following the thought processes and interactions of the protagonist while in prison gives the reader the uncomfortable feeling that while justice for the murders is being exacted, the protagonist is oblivious...aware only of the final kindness. Truly gut-wrenching...but you're not sure what aspect is really tearing you apart. Definitely thought-provoking. An outstanding book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little piece of nihilism, May 7, 2009
By

This review is from: While the Devil Waits (Paperback)
The unnamed narrator in this slim gem is the most polite psychopath you would ever want to meet. Seen as meek and mild by everybody around him, his emotional explosions are a sight to behold.
