Editorial Reviews

Jeff Ament's second solo album, While My Heart Beats, is utterly and undeniably alive. The legendary Pearl Jam bassist paints a poetic pastiche of sounds, spanning a palette of tribal percussion and a distorted guitar hum. Ament's constructed a psychedelic and philosophical journey commencing with the tambourine jangle and riff stomp of "Ulcers & the Apocalypse". Lyrically, it's a remembrance of youth that's instantly poignant. Running down the line, "When the Fire Comes" exudes a cinematic elegance as the song builds into an impressively catchy refrain. Meanwhile, his signature bass thud punctuates "War in Your Eyes" with a heavy punch that guarantees another knockout rocker. "Give It a Name" glides along on a snappy riff and a resounding vocal echo. Then, there's the standout acoustic "Take My Hand", where he proclaims, "Angels burn". His elegant lyrical prose begs a closer listen and ultimately pulls in the audience just a little closer. Everything culminates during the spacey dreamscape of "Never Forget", which pulls together into another vibrant lullaby. The album's a true gem, and Ament constructs a personal ride that's worth taking. Your heart might beat even a little faster by the end of it. --Artist Direct

While My Heart Beats, the second solo album from Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, will be released tomorrow (June 12) via the band s own Monkeywrench Records. Ament s first solo disc, Tone, came out back in 2008. Ament recorded While My Heart Beats in Montana with help from Brett Eliason, Richard Stuverud (Three Fish), Joseph Arthur and some of his bandmates. Don Pendleton painted the cover art. In a handwritten note on Pearl Jam s website, Ament says We grew together out of smallness. All we knew was the little that surrounded us. It seems like we had it all...but once we tasted the outside, we felt an insatiable hunger to move away from the comfort of our community to build something new out of the unknown. When one of us was afraid, we reached out and supported each other with a belief I never felt before. I am forever grateful to have such friends. While My Heart Beats is a tribute to the magic that connects us. Ament s album is available for purchase on Pearl Jam s official site. Meanwhile, Pearl Jam returned to the studio earlier this year to work on material for their tenth studio album. --Loud Wire

4.0 out of 5 stars I REALLY like it! August 28, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I'd give five stars if Jeff had included his reworking of Other Side, he gave it away in a special two-song disc at Alpine Valley, like those people there didn't have enough going for them, he had to give them yet another bonus, but nothing for the likes of me! I can't even buy it! Jeff is a gifted musician and songwriter, and these songs come from pain of all sorts and his transition through that; he lost his best friend in 2009 in a horrifying, bizarre accident that is still hard to comprehend, one of those things that you just don't know how the person's family and friends can handle, and the album is dedicated to them and inspired by Jeff's devastating loss. Nine days after that, Jeff was mugged and robbed in Atlanta and it doesn't seem like they ever caught the crooks, but AP, in their infinite wisdom, put the surveillance video on YouTube so everyone could gawk at the attack. He's been through A LOT the last three years alone, and it's all here, the anger, the pain, the change, the recovery . My particular favorites are When The Fire Comes, Never Forget, Take My Hand, Down To Sleep, actually, there's only one song here that I don't like as much as the others, but that's my little secret. Other musicians include Richard Stuverud, one of the most underrated drummers to pick up a pair of sticks, the great Matt Cameron and the great Mike McCready, and Joseph Arthur, who sings lead on When The Fire Comes. Cover art and logo, which I love, by Don Pendleton -- good work, but I miss having one of Jeff's paintings on the cover. This is only his second solo album, but to me, each represents how lives should be lived, no matter what you do or what you're into -- it's Jeff's complete statement, pure, take it or leave it, but it's 100% him, the artwork, the music, his complete expression, and that just speaks to me like few things do.
