5.0 out of 5 stars Most riveting work yet from one of the suspense genre's best

1.0 out of 5 stars Slow start - abupt ending!
I normally enjoy this writer; however this book was a bit slow. The ending was rushed and it should never have been listed as a romantic suspence since there was little to no romance to speak of. The reader was also told about half way thru who did it so there was not even a mystery to keep the reader hooked.

This review is from: While Others Sleep (Mira) (Mass Market Paperback)
Long-time fans of Helen R. Myers's work are well-acquainted with her incredible talent in creating characters you can reach out and touch. Never has this been more evident than in her latest release, WHILE OTHERS SLEEP.

Campbell Cody, the female protagonist, is just the sort of amazing lead character this author is famous for. Tough as nails with a touchingly vulnerable heart, Ms. Myers puts readers stoutly in her corner from page one.

Of course, no strong woman will accept anything less than a strong man, and that's just what fans will find in the male protagonist, Jackson Blade. A cynic by experience, this sexy-as-sin undercover detective plays his cards close to his vest and is all the more intriguing for it.

With a lush cast of absolutely unforgettable secondary characters and a plot that will keep you guessing until the last page, Ms. Myers has done it again. This is one suspense novel readers will continue thinking about for days after they've closed the cover for the last time. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCITING BOOK, GREAT READING, May 9, 2004
This review is from: While Others Sleep (Mira) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. Helen Myers has finally hit her stride. This is a fast-paced, well plotted story.

Romantic suspense should have a great romance, inside a great mystery. This book has both. I have read some of her other books and while they are passable, this one is great.

Campbell Cody is a likable, brave, determined woman. She is willing to go the extra mile for a friend. And when that friend disappears under strange circumstances, she sets out to find her.
Although Campbell has learned that life is not always just, that many, even in law enforcement are as corrupt as criminals, she is not. She still believes in right and wrong.

Jackson Blade is an undercover cop who has learned the same lessons as Campbell. Where she hasn't let life defeat her, Blade has just existed since his life was turned up-side down.

These two are brought together by seemingly unconnected crimes. However, as the plot moves forward, they realize they are on the same trail.

Working together to solve the mystery, they find what is missing in their lives, in each other. The mystery is solved, and two lonely people come to know themselves, in a very suspenseful and exciting way.

Overall, this is the best Helen R Myers book I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A chilling look at our society and the monsters that lurk .., April 1, 2004
This review is from: While Others Sleep (Mira) (Mass Market Paperback)
Helen R. Myers can spin quite a yarn. I became an instant fan several years ago after reading her romantic suspense, LOST, and then became a devotee with MORE THAN YOU KNOW. Both novels are keepers and are frequent rereads.

Her newest romantic suspense, WHILE OTHERS SLEEP, is a wild roller coaster ride with enough twists and turns to keep you reading-and entertained. From the highly intense-and effective-opening chapter to the creepy end, WHILE OTHERS SLEEP was hard to put down. This story kept up a steady pace of shocks and chills while Ms. Myers cleverly tucked small teasers into the building suspense.

Ms. Myers normally writes strong, capable and honorable heroines, and she doesn't scrimp with Campbell Cody in WHILE OTHERS SLEEP. Campbell, the heart and soul of this story, meets her equal in the morally upright-and delicious-Jackson Blade, an undercover cop who clings to the night shadows.

Both characters work during the night while others sleep and the dark of night sets the tone for this story. This pair, both with tragic episodes in their pasts, slowly claw their way toward the light. While WHILE OTHERS SLEEP isn't a particularly dark story as a whole, it does have dark undertones, especially when the villains (actually one real villain) are revealed. Monsters lurk in the dark shadows and sociopaths can come in all forms...and ages.

It was hard not to analyze WHILE OTHERS SLEEP. Is society perhaps the ultimate villain of this piece for wanton disinterest? This story is thought-provoking, insightful, and, yes, chilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this terse tale, March 30, 2004
This review is from: While Others Sleep (Mira) (Mass Market Paperback)
In Longview, Texas, Campbell Cody works for her father's security firm that provides protection to Maple View Retirement Community. During a ferocious storm, Campbell observes resident Maida Livingston speed out of the complex. Campbell reports the incident, but cannot do anything about it especially after lightning struck her.

Jackson Blade works undercover for the police trying to bring drug peddlers and runners to justice. He runs into Campbell at the hospital. Later Campbell learns that Maida is dead. The police find blood in her home and believe the murder occurred there; Campbell is a suspect. When Campbell meets Jackson again, he admits he is an undercover cop. As they work together to solve who killed Maida, they fall in love, but his work and her aspirations make anything permanent impossible.

Though the "dueling" murder mystery investigations (official and by the lead couple) takes a while before coming to the forefront, fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this terse tale due to a powerful cast especially the support crew. Between many of the secondary characters and the heroine, readers receive an intriguing deep look at what goes on behind the scenes of a security firm keeping a fenced in community safe. Jackson is the more enigmatic individual as he wants Campbell, but knows he cannot have her as long as he remains underground. No one in the audience will go to sleep until they finish this novel in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Ten!!, April 14, 2004

Helen, you've done it again! What a fantastic ride. Your talent astounds. Each new release reminds why I became a fan years ago after you hooked me with "Whispers in the Woods." WHILE OTHERS SLEEP shows the adept way you weave mystery, suspense, romance, and the complexity of human relationships into a memorable read. Rugged Jackson Blade could find no better mate than Campbell Cody - or "Bella Belle" as Blade calls her. Those two make an enviable combination! In addition, the secondary characters and lovable dog brought such richness to the plot. I'm thrilled and satisfied. This reader hated to reach the end. Thanks!! LB
