I'm debating whether I should put this book in the recycling bin or send it anonomously to someone I don't like. Many of the ingredients just don't go together. I don't care for pasta mixed with potatoes or pasta covered with mashed beans. How about sauerkraut and chicken livers over elbows or rosemary, sage and egg yolk over spaghetti? Sound like winners? Big thumbs...

First of all this book ain't cheap so I was rather disgusted that if you exclude the cover it contained not one single picture .... OK so it may be hard to take a picture of pasta sauce bubbling in a skillet but .....

Now for the good part ... recepies in this book are stupendous and many are quite unique with some equisite new flavours for pasta sauce that I think I've been making for over 30 years or so.

Although the book is titled 'while the pasta cooks' and its true that all the sauces are whipped together in a pan or wok the intriguing flavours presented by the authors usually will require some planning and a stop at your local supermarket ....

The flavours presented in many of these recepies are so unique, do not fall into the tempatation to either skip or subsitiute ingredients because the simplicity of the recepies makes them very very unique .... nuff said ...

Appart from my whining about the pictures this is one great cookbook ....

I can't believe this book is out of print! It is a great cookbook to have around, because the sauces are so quick to prepare. I've also found the recipes very forgiving, if you don't have exactly the same ingredients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pasta cookbook for quick & easy recipes, November 3, 2007
This review is from: While the Pasta Cooks: 100 Sauces So Easy You Can Prepare the Sauce in the Time It Takes to Cook the Pasta (Hardcover)
I like this book because the recipes are delicious and are quick and easy to make. Most of the recipes have 10 or fewer ingredients and nothing too exotic that it can't be found at the local grocery store. In fact, I often picked up this cookbook to see if I could find a recipe with ingredients I already have on-hand so I could make a last-minute dinner. The variety in the recipes also gives me inspiration to change up the ingredients a bit to create my own sauces.

The book includes a number of sections:
Tomato Sauces
Herb Sauces
Dry Sauces
Meat Sauces
Seafood Sauces
Vegetable Sauces
Cheese Sauces
Stir-Fried Sauces
Uncooked Sauces
Creamy Sauces

Recipes samples include "Tomato Mint Vinaigrette", "Marinated Artichoke and Feta Sauce", "Hot Pepper Clam Sauce", "Lemon Scallop Sauce", and "Sicilian Meat Sauce" to name a few.

The format of the book is simple, on recipe per page, with the ingredients highlighted so it's quick to see if you have them on-hand. There aren't any photos for the recipes which may have enhanced the cookbook a bit, but the recipes are still delicious.

This is a good cookbook to keep on hand so you can throw together a quick and delicious pasta dish at the last minute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, everyday cooking for people who love pasta, April 8, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: While the Pasta Cooks: 100 Sauces So Easy You Can Prepare the Sauce in the Time It Takes to Cook the Pasta (Hardcover)
Simple, straight-forward, most recipes have few ingredients, you can cook most of them quicker than you can make one of those frozen pasta dishes in a bag. I have prepared many of them and they are really wonderful, the people you cook them for will think you spent all day cooking for them

This book is awesome! It sits on my counter and I use it on a weekly basis. My friends have quit asking my for my pasta recipes as they assume it is all from this book - they are usually correct.

Recipes so short you can make them in the time it takes to cook a pot of pasta. And if they are that short how complicated can they be? These are easy recipes.

Great for when you get home, tired and hungry, and need to cook. Simple, interesting, tasty and best of all fast recipes that won't let you starve while you wait for dinner.

Make sure you are not hungry when you peruse these recipes! They are easy to make -- and oh so good. The ingredients are readily available -- even living in a foreign country. The extra info on which sauce works best with which noodle type is a nice plus. If you love pasta, this is THE book to have on your shelf. The ideas on how to stock basic ingredients in your pantry make assembly quick and economical. With the variety of sauce recipes you can eat pasta every other night. Remember though -- don't read on an empty stomach!
