A nice debut effort - 4 stars!,

A very nice pop/rock debut by Lucy Woodward. The best songs on the album are: Dumb Girls, Is This Hollywood and Always Something. I actually think she could squeeze two more Top 40 hits from this debut. Her songs have nice guitar licks and just enough chord changes/modulations to make everyone happy. Her lyrics are simplistic, but they match nicely with the actual album content (not a bad thing).I would be a shame if this album didn't got Platinum and a REAL SHAME if it didn't go Gold.

Lucy Woodward's album is a hands-down winner. I don't know exactly what I was expecting when I purchased it. "Dumb Girls" was constantly on my mind, so I picked it up and listened. It didn't grip me, not right away. "Dumb Girls" was still the best song on the album.
It grows on you, though. Song by song, you'll discover the range of this girl's talent and catchiness. The next song I grew to enjoy, "Blindsided", is a fun enough song, but Im not sure why I grew to enjoy it. Probably one of the most mediocre songs on the album. "Trust Me (You Don't Want To See This)" is an AMAZING song! I can't get over it. It's funky, interesting, and very clever. The guitar in the beginning is what drew me in. See, a bit of background about ME (which won't really help you understand the music any) is that I listen to music while I sleep. Usually while I'm in the process of drifting towards being awake, if there's a song on I don't know, I'll typically love it. I don't know why I do this, but it happens quite frequently. It happened for this song, and now I am addicted to it. She is basically warning a potential lover to cover his eyes while she sows her wild oats. It's a fun song! "Is This Hollywood" is my current Lucy Woodward trip. This song is powerful in it's own right. She moves across country and disjoints her life in an effort to get over a scorned love. The chorus is beautiful, haunting, and addictive. To be honest, I haven't given the rest of the album a whole lot of listen because I dwell on those songs. I guarantee that I will soon find another song to love, just give me time. Oh, and yeah...pick this up.

SIMPLY AMAZING!,

When i first heard the hit single "DUMB GIRLS" i wasn't really into it. But little by little i loved it! It was radically smoothing but yet so upbeat and strong! Then on April 1, 2003 my favorite cd came out! WOW! That's all i can say! This cd is just so amazing, i have heard this cd ever since everyday. And i have heard it in its entirety like 10 times. It's a really good cd! There has never been a momne thtat is dull on this cd. Personally my favorite track is "IS THIS HOLLYWOOD" but i can't really certify that beacue i love all of the songs. Every song just hooks you from the beginning and just marvels you and consumes you. Let's just hope that it goes platinum and that she comes out with a follow-up cd. Let's hope the rest of the songs get noticed!!!!!!!!!!!My ratings: *her three ballads (SOMETHING ALWAYS, STANDING, AND DONE) are all amazing, i am never really attached to ballads but i am soooo attached to these beacuse they are just so beautiful and awesome. i have never seen such ballads so beautifully written*

She has potential,

When you pop this CD in your CD player, you will probably think you recognize the raw, sturdy vocals. "Oooooh it's Sheryl Crow!". Nope, but close. "Of course it's Jewel!". Nope but even closer. It's Lucy Woodward, the newest arrival to the pop/rock genre singing her heart on the 11 songs.None of the songs pack the same punch or deliver the message harder than "Dumb Girls" and "Blindsided". The songs, to me, are the best on the CD. They are R&B influenced and very catchy, with "Dumb Girls" being about getting dumped and trying to move on, and "Blindsided" being about being in love with someone and wondering how it happened. Lucy Woodwards voice is surprisingly, a powerful, soulful mixture of Sheryl Crow and Pink (more of the latter) with just a drop of Christina Aguilera. It seems to me that musically, her influcences are Jewel and all those other female singer/songwriters and maybe some R&B artists. Lucy's lyrics are unique but definetely not as enigmatic and puzzling as Nelly Furtado's or No Doubt's. However, Lucy does fall victim to some songs that sound like other artists. Mostly "Trust Me" which probably will remind you of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" and "What Good For Me" which will also remind you of Michelle Branch's "Everywhere". Both these songs fall into the alternative/pop category. These mishaps shouldn't steer you away from buying the CD since her voice makes up for it but be aware that while it is an excellent debut, it will be hard for her to distinguish herself from the Avrils/Vanessa Carltons/Michelle Branches/Pinks/ etc.

Better Than I Expected,
This review is from: While You Can (Audio CD)
Based on the cover art I figured she'd be just another manufactured girl-pop artist, and it's true you can sense a strong "steering" in the production towards a familiar sound. Still, her voice is quite good and there are some enjoyable songs here. There's just a bit more punch and rock than you hear on Sheyl Crow or Avril's albums, and it helps give the CD some vitality.
In the end, I decided to take this CD home and give it a chance. Being an open minded listener, means being willing not to discard good artists, just because they've been carefully "packaged" by the Label.

When I first heard of this girl I thought UGH another wannabe britney. But this girl can actually sing. Good beats and great lyrics. For someone who wrote her herself, I give it 4 stars.

I had first heard about Lucy from the "What a Girl Wants" Soundtrack with her song "What's Good for Me" and fell in love with it. I loved this CD so much. Each song was carefully put together and there wasn't a song I hated. I really think that she is a great writer and singer and should be more appreciated and become the next chart-topper!

I ordered this CD after watching the "Dumb Girls" video on VH1. I loved it, but it never came on again, so I broke down and bought this CD. I think it is wrong to try and put Lucy Woodward in one category. I am a "pop" music fan, but this isn't an album that would only appeal to that group. My friends who aren't pop fans would like this. I've listened to Avril and Michelle and all the others in the group people say she's like, and most of the songs on those albums didn't strike me. All on the songs on "While You Can" struck me on first listen. The lyrics are and rhythms are very cool. You have a few pop tracks, a few rock driven tracks. It's very good. Check it out.

I do appreciate Lucy Woodward's debut - enough that hearing "Dumb Girls" twice spurred me to eventually chase down the album. I especially like "Done", but "Dumb Girls" is still my favorite. It, unlike every other song, sounds different. It works a novel topic in with the we're-not-together-anymore lyrics of every other song (that topic being the ditzes of the title). It's catchier and more clever. Absolutely every other song, though too-obvious effort was taken to make the beginnings different, has the same combination of Lucy's singing over a clear, mid-tempo beat and melodic chords. The lyrics are meaningful and well thought out, though not particularly amazing, deeply personal, or hard-hitting. Don't pass this up, but don't expect it to be your favorite CD.
