Diary of a disaster,
By A Customer
This review is from: While the gettin's good: Inside the World Football League (Hardcover)
While The Gettin's Good is the only book, at least the only one I found, about the ill-fated World Football League (1974-75). It traces the building of the WFL on a weak foundation, focusing mainly on the New York/Charlotte Stars franchiseWhile it delivers on one level, showing why the WFL was doomed from the start, it fails on another. The league's first, and only, complete season is glossed over as if the author decided he had already written too much about the creation of the league and the early interworking of the Stars and it was time to wrap up the book. Despite its minor shortcoming, it's a must for WFL buffs ... if you can find it.

This is an okay book if you want to look at some rare pictures of the WFL or you were a big fan of the league. There really aren't many options as far as print books if you want info. After reading Long Bomb(XFL) and The $1 League(USFL) I have to say this is the worst of the three as far as information. This book covers the 1st season of the WFL only and really only focuses on the New York/Charlotte franchise. It is mostly personal stories and contains very little info as far as the games themselves. Aside from a few interesting human interest stories, there isn't much happening. It is a short book and has never been updated to include the 2nd partial season or a look back on how the WFL affected the NFL or the players who actually played in the upstart league. I would have liked a little more. The big news from the WFL was the signing of Larry Csonka and 2 other Dolphin players that first year, but the book barely mentions the signings and then no other mention of the NFL stars appear anywhere else in the book. Not worth the high price being charged by some sellers.
