Book Description

December 5, 2008
David Weidman's name may not be familiar, but his work certainly is. Weidman began his career as an animator in 1950s Los Angeles, painting backgrounds for Hannah Barbara and setting the standard for the look of cartoons of that era. However, like a true entrepreneur he soon began to work for himself, and went on to establish a style that is today instantly recognizable and iconic. A printmaker, ceramicist, font designer, painter, cartoonist, and silk screener, Weidman never stopped experimenting as an artist. Today at age 87 Weidman's staggering body of work is just as modern and visually stunning as it was forty years ago. His graphic sensibility and expert use of saturated color palletes evoke the vintage modern look while remaining completely relevant to contemporary designers. The Whimsical Work of David Weidman is a long overdue career retrospective of a true originator, who created the look of an era.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Perusing The Whimsical Work of David Weidman and Also Some Serious Ones (Gingko Press, $34.95), a new book that collects the artist s output, might bring back memories of childhood Saturdays spent in front of the TV with a bowl of cereal. In the 1950s and early 60s, Mr. Weidman worked for animation studios like Hanna-Barbera. Later, he opened a gallery in West Hollywood, Calif., where he sold graphic silk-screen prints in saturated colors that found favor with interior decorators and commercial clients. Some of my prints were instigated by having a feeling about a particular subject, said Mr. Weidman, who often depicted animals or other aspects of the natural world. At other times, I would finish a print, grab a subject matter and go. I had to make a living. The artist, 87 and retired, now sells his vintage serigraphs online, most for $45 to $275 ( Dummy Cat, is $220). --Steven Kurutz, The New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful October 18, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Length: 0:50 Mins
I have no idea who's David Weldman but the cover really caught my eye. I love how the colours and how they overlay on one another, and the textural feel of the whole piece.

Mr. Weidman is an artists who used to work in animation studios back in the 1950s, before he turned to serigraphs (stencil) and silkscreen printing.

Collected in this 216-page hardcover is a collection of his wonderful art. The work he did for animation which includes character designs and animation backgrounds. The characters are very cartoon like, looks animated and have a nice style to them.

His silk-screen prints are gorgeous. The subject, the colour schemes and textures all combine to create vibrant pieces of art. They look really great and I imagine they will look terrific as huge paintings on walls. Some of the designs are looks really complicated, especially those with lots of overlays. It's hard to find anyone who makes art like this anymore.

It's a very beautiful book. Definitely a keeper if you love silk-screen art.

5.0 out of 5 stars 60s-70s ART LOVER'S HEAVEN!!! October 7, 2009
By JB
Format:Hardcover
Haven't heard of David Weidman? Don't worry, you're not alone. But the reason has nothing to do with talent--think of all the artists whose work now hangs in museums who died both poor and obscure. Weidman was a Hanah-Barbara animator who later went out on his own, opening a framing store on La Cienega in Los Angeles were he also tried to hawk his great silk screen art. Sadly, people wanted his frames, but not his art (which fills the pages of this beautiful book). He stopped making silk screens, put his unsold inventory away, and turned to ceramics, which he still makes today in his home in Highland park. Fortunately for us, he now sells, in limited editions and quantities, much of what you will find replicated in this book. A master of the medium of silk screening, the creation of unique and innovative fonts, and color, Weidman's best is as good as anything you'll find. He's 88 years old and finally enjoying a trickle of long overdue recognition. This book should help make it a flood.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful work!! July 9, 2009
Format:Hardcover
this book came out of nowhere..whoa!!

I was not familiar with David WEidman's work, but man am i glad i picked this book up. HIs graphic sensibility and use of color, texture and forms are fantastic. I wish there had been more interviews with him talking about his art and ideas, but there is still some good inciteful stuff in here from him.
if you like the cover than you can expect ALOT more of that type of work inside. love it!
