5.0 out of 5 stars Personal insight, not just care & training, January 8, 2000
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Dr. Coile's WHIPPETS is more than just a How-to-raise-and-train-your-dog book, it is a personal introduction into the history and lives of these sensitive, athletic, and loving dogs. Of course there is the requisite information on choosing and purchasing a dog, health, and training; but Dr. Coile's 35 years of sighthound ownership also give a her special insight to this breed, which she imparts to her readers with love and skill.

Whippets can be very happy living in an apartment, provided they get enough of the right kind of exercise--not the same kind of exercise a retriever or scent hound would need. Dr. Coile explains the various field and conformation competitions and activities that Whippets enjoy and excel at, as well as the best methods to train your Whippet (always with love and praise, not with punishment).

Appendices include the AKC Whippet Standard and useful addresses and literature for more information on Whippets. Plenty of gorgeous color photos and wonderful illustrations by Michelle Earle-Bridges complete this package that is indispensible to Whippet owners, those considering getting a Whippet, and dog lovers who just want to learn more about this graceful breed. Although it is not a big book, it is concise and all very breed-specific--this is not just general dog information with one chapter about Whippets thrown in, as some breed books by other publishers seem to be. Whether you buy many books about Whippets or just one, this volume is the one to get first.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Whippets and their care., October 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Dr. Coile has done an outstanding job with this small, compact book that is also reasonably priced! As a Whippet breeder, I give one to each of my puppy buyers as a handbook to refer to whenever they have questions. New owners have a resource tool at their disposal that covers all the basics of care, and training as well as providing pictures of some outstanding dogs.

My only complaints about the book are the organization of the photo credits and lack of identification on the dogs in the photos. It isn't necessary to go into bloodlines or pedigrees, but just tell who those beautiful animals are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great whippet book, June 7, 2000

This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book is a great introductory text! It's accessible, without being condescending. It includes a large number of very good pictures. For a skinny book with many pictures, there is a suprising amount of information packed into the binding.

Of special note is the attention paid to the special training and medical care requirements that whippets have. Since sighthounds are so different compared to other breeds (like labs or goldens), this is an excellent inclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good basic info, August 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I bought this book after adopting our whippet pup. It is a good overview of the basics for this breed. It is focused on health and happiness of your pet and basic care, entertainment, raising, training, and health/first aid of your pup. It's a good book to have for reference for those of us who "just like the breed" (probably not specific enough for breeders/showers).

4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information, January 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Great book - comprehensive guide for whippet owners. Useful information for those primarily interested as a pet owner rather than those looking for specialised advice on breeding, showing etc. Highly recommended. Should be mandatory reading for all prospective/new whippet owners. The information is detailed yet highly readable. The writing is of an excellent standard making it a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for novices and experienced alike, January 29, 2001
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Well written book that does wonders explaining the breed to those who may not be familiar with it. I recommend it to anyone I sell a puppy to. For experienced whippet folks, it is a great addition to a breed library. Price is wonderful!

I have found this book to be an excellent source for Whippet enthusiasts. It is quite comprehensive, has some stunning photography, and deals with pretty much every facet of owning one of these wonderful animals. It gave me a great deal of insight into Whippets in general. Highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for Would Be Whippet Owners, October 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
While the book is fairly concise, it is a very thorough handbook for owning a Whippet. I have referenced it many times in the few months since owning a Whippet puppy and each time it has something valuable to say. I highly suggest owning this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puppy Twins, May 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Whippets (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
After my beloved greyhound passed in Feb 09, my husband surprised me with two whippet puppies just after Easter. I was, to say the least, shocked! I immediately ordered a few books including this one. After inhaling its contents, I immediately felt the similarities of the two breeds. The book helped tremendously in explaining the little "breed" quirks and temperment. Lacking, I thought, was extended information on puppies, potty training this breed and having two at a time - I am sure I am not unique in that many dog owners have two! There is a picture and a caption early in the book that states something to the effect that whippets should not be a surprise gift to anyone. I disagree, although a challenge, they are a delight! This book has definately been a positive resource.
