5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - the best popcorn ever!
I bought this when my air popper died & I am so glad I found this product! The popcorn is the best & it is very simple to make. The thing I like the best is that it is a healthy alternative to the chemically filled microwave popcorn. I can choose which oil to use & how much so I have total control over what goes into my popcorn so I feel confident that what I am eating...

2.0 out of 5 stars Broke after about 5 months
We had this popcorn maker for about 5 months before it broke. One of the plastic gears broke. They used to be made out of metal. It worked well up until that point I guess.

I bought this when my air popper died & I am so glad I found this product! The popcorn is the best & it is very simple to make. The thing I like the best is that it is a healthy alternative to the chemically filled microwave popcorn. I can choose which oil to use & how much so I have total control over what goes into my popcorn so I feel confident that what I am eating is good for me.

The packaged corn that came with was ok & a good introduction to using the popper but I will not buy packages again as it is so easy to make a great tasting popcorn on my own. I did try the cinnamon popcorn recipe from the included book & it was fantastic!

I would recommend this to anyone, the popper is easy to handle, easy to clean & it makes the best, crisp & crunchy popcorn ever. It only takes about 3 minutes to be done & you can even use the stirring mechanism to stir extra butter in it or other salt or other seasonings. Sometimes simple & old fashioned is better & that is the case with this item.

Now we can't wait to rent a movie so we have an excuse to pop popcorn almost every night!

I was a little concerned that the Whiley-Pop might be a hassle to use and would end up stored with the fondue, assorted blenders, choppers, magic egg or bullet, etc. But it wasn't! It works as well as described and is very easy to clean and store. We use it a lot so I'm pleased with my decision to purchase it.

Popcorn does not burn (unless you walk away from it(DAMHIK), I find that less expensive popcorn pops just as well as some of the brands that cost 3 times as much.

When it arrived I was a little put off by the thinness of the pot but after using it realized it let the heat spread quickly and evenly across the bottom.

Buy One. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes great popcorn. Experimenting can be disasterous though!, August 25, 2007

When I first got my Whirley Pop, I tested several types of popcorn and several types of oil. It definately prefers gourmet popcorn (regular stuff from the grocery store didn't pop up nearly as well, or at all.) Also it likes lighter, more viscous oils. (Vegetable or canola) I tried olive oil and that was a mistake! It made a huge burned mess.

My biggest complaint is that I have had to call to get two tops replaced in the past 8 months due to them breaking (the little gears just break apart) but they have always been very pleasant about it, and sent new ones free. They also said this problem has been fixed at the manufacturing end, so I hope not to have to call them again.

My other complaint is cleaning the thing. If you use just a tablespoon or two of oil (which it advertises it does) be prepared for using steel wool for several minutes after each use. If you don't, and leave the little burned remains (even if they are quite low) the next batch will stick there and the mess just gets worse. As I don't like my popcorn oily, I end up spending a significant amount of time scrubbing the bottom of the pot, even when it hasn't burned (it still leaves a few remains which have to be scrubbed off.) But the popcorn is worth it!

I bought a huge bag of popcorn and a gallon of popcorn oil at a membership warehouse and they have been working really well. (The popcorn was $12 for something like 50lbs, which will last us a lifetime. And it is GOOD!) The oil is that stuff they use at movie theaters which is butter flavored, but we can use very little and it pops well in it.

I've had mine for a couple of years now and still love it. I even bought a 2nd one as a gift. After experimenting with different temperatures (I have gas), and going through about 12 varieties of popcorn, I feel like I have mastered the craft. The super-fine popcorn salt is crucial. Unfortunately I also discovered that hands-down the best oil is the coconut oil-based stuff. BTW, the Wabash Farms Kettle Corn is shockingly delicious, but can be a cleanup chore.

We got this yesterday and it pops the popcorn super fast on our gas stove...
i was really surprised with how much faster than the microwave it pops up the popcorn. We ate 12 quarts for popcorn yesterday :) (two Batches)
i was unimpressed about how lightweight the pan was it's super thin but it's only on the stove for a matter of minutes at a time so it's not really an issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just follow the instructions...., February 6, 2009

I got my Whirley Pop popper about one month ago, and have made about 10-15 batches already, including the kettle corn recipe included. I read all the reviews on every version of the popper listed here, and was not to sure if I would be satisfied. I made sure to follow the instructions to a "T" from the get-go, and made amazing popcorn. We eat popcorn at least twice a week, so we know popcorn pretty well. The plastic gear has not been an issue, because we use slightly over medium heat on a 9 yr old stove. The starter packs included will hook you. I already went out and bought popcorn oils and salts that the pros use. The kids love for me to make kettle corn for them also. The only negative is that if you don't wipe it down once it cools, it does become harder to remove the oil and salt residue. If you wipe it down once it is cool(after you eat your popcorn) it will wipe away with no water or soap. If this popper does ever break down, I will use the lifetime warranty to replace it or buy a new one if needed. If you are unsure if you should buy it, get it, follow the instructions, and I believe you'll be satisfied. P.S. The different popcorn you use will make a difference. I use the popcorn with the old guy on the label.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoying the popper, June 15, 2007

I purchased this popper after becoming concerned about possible health issues with bagged microwave popcorn. I am glad I did. I use it daily and am in control of the seasoning on my popcorn. I like much less salt on my popcorn than most and no butter. I am surprised that my husband is eating my plain popcorn now instead of extra butter & salt flavors.

If I had it to do again I would just get the popper without the packets of seasoned popcorn. I have only used one of them and found it to be less crisp than the plain store brand popcorn.

I agree with other reviewers about the cheaper store brand popcorn be equal or better than the high price brand.

My only con is that a little steam/grease spatters through the vents and lands on my hand/arm while popping. Not painful but annoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd purchase after 8 years of GREAT popcorn, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Whirley-Pop Gourmet Assorted Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn Popper (Kitchen)
This is the 2nd purchase of a Whirley-Pop. I've gotten spoiled by how good it is because movie theater popcorn tastes gross to me now -(strange coating on tonge). I pop my own and smuggle it in. The recipes that come with it are also fabulous. My family likes the "Sweet Touch" recipe that adds 4 tablespoons of sugar to the oil, popcorn and salt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real popcorn, November 4, 2006
This review is from: Whirley-Pop Gourmet Assorted Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn Popper (Kitchen)
this is the third whirley popcorn popper that I have purchased. I give them as gifts to my friends who are true popcorn lovers.
The popcorn is never greasy, always tender and maintains a real popcorn flavor.

5.0 out of 5 stars video demonstration of Whirley-Pop, December 12, 2010
This review is from: Whirley-Pop Gourmet Assorted Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn Popper (Kitchen)
Length:: 2:52 Mins

The directions claim that it doesn't matter if you crank the handle slowly or quickly. I take my time and rotate the handle clockwise. Am I correct? I don't know. I do know that the popcorn tastes perfect (hot and yummy) every time I have used the Whirley-Pop. I've owned this product for approximately 18 months and use it on a daily basis. At first, I was concerned about the large size on the stove-top, but I overcame that quickly once I realized how convenient it was for me to make hot delicious popcorn. Great product.
