Book Description

November 9, 1997
Life was simple--living in bunkers, bathing out of wells, avoiding booby traps--but advisors learned that the Vietnamese culture was deep, rich, and complex. In this poignant collection of poetry, Mr. Thomas graphically portrays his feelings about the pain, confusion, and senselessness of this war.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

After I finished college with an accounting major in May, 1967, the draft board was on me like locusts on a cornfield. I went through Infantry Officer Candidate School, subsequently being assigned as an advisor to Vietnamese militia stationed about 30 miles west of Saigon, a few miles east of the Cambodian border. There, we accompanied the militia on day and night patrols, but also taught tactics, sanitation, and assisted in civil projects. We seldom made contact with the enemy in the daytime; they attacked us at night in our small outpost, where we coordinated artillery and helicopter support. These poems are of the war, the people, and the country.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Vietnam as viewed by a compassionate combatant, October 19, 2001
This review is from: Whirling Fire (Paperback)
The poetry by Jack Thomas brings back vivid memories of a time that many of us wish we could forget but these memories will, unfortunately, follow us to our graves. While reading the poetry I could feel the compassion that Mr. Thomas felt for the Vietnamese and for his fellow soldiers. Anyone who wants to feel what the Vietnam war felt like should read this book.
