I was lead to believe I was buying a ORIGINAL WHIRLPOOL 1183054 FILTER but what I received was a similar filter with no Whirlbool box or Whirlpool markings or Whirlpool part number on the filter. Filter shipped has a Part number of RFF05503 has no other information on it and the filter itself was packaged only in a clear plastic bag with no product documentation. Makes you wonder where it was made and if is a true HEPA filter. Was I ripped off?

I have an older Whispure 510 air purifier and I've used both aftermarket filters, sold via Filters-now through Amazon, as well as this filter, which is a Whirlpool branded filter. The aftermarket filters are certainly cheaper, by approximately $20, and seem to work fine, but are of significantly inferior construction. This filter has a sturdy plastic frame with a caulked edge, rather than a cardboard frame with no caulking. The filter media in the Whirlpool filter is also much stiffer than the aftermarket media and does not flex when installing the filter.

Does this ultimately matter? I suppose the true test would be to use some sort of complicated particle counter to test filter efficiency, but absent that, I can say that the additional $18 does seem to provide a better product. Air filters provide, among other things, piece of mind, and the sturdier construction factors into that. One final comment: the aftermarket carbon prefilters are fine - no need to spend additional for Whirlpool branded pieces of sponge.

These are not real Whirlpool filters. They are clearly NOT Whirlpool OEM product but rather they are cheap aftermarket Filters with no indication who actually manufactured them.

Whirlpool originals are of much higher build quality with plastic rims and the HEPA filter paper itself is of much higher quality than these very cheap knock offs (built with cardboard & cheaper paper). If you could compare them side by side its night and day in quality.

The filters they sent also have a very odd chemical smell which is unpleasant.
I decided not to even use them they were that cheap.

UPDATE:
Seller sent out replacements after my complaint. Ammending rating to 3 stars.

I am allergic to pretty much everything that floats around in the air, so I rely heavily on my Whirlpool 450 Whispure Air Purifier to keep me breathing easy. It's hard to separate the function of this HEPA filter from the air purifier itself, but the filter must be doing a good job because I sleep better than I have in ages with it cleaning the air in my room 24 hours a day. True, this HEPA filter is a little pricey, but when you consider that you only have to change it once a year it comes out to a bargain at $6.58 a month! And I definitely recommend buying this HEPA filter on Amazon since you'll pay at least $99 for it anywhere else.

This filter may fit better than aftermarket ones, but just like cartridges for inkjet printers, these replaceable supplies are the real moneymaker for the company and they price them accordingly.

Is this filter worth $80-90? Compared to the $300+ price of the main unit itself and factoring in how often you would need to change it, I think the value is debatable. The Whirlpool AP450/AP510 models do not even begin to compare with something like the IQ Air HealthPro series. But then again, HealthPros start at $800 and up (main filter replacements are $200).

Also be aware that the black carbon filter from Whirlpool (for use in front of this filter) is overpriced as well. You can buy 16" x 48" carbon sheets for a couple dollars and cut them yourself. All the carbon sheet does is catch larger particles (cat hair, etc.) and help reduce some odor. You can vacuum these (with a HEPA vacuum of course) a couple times before changing them.

The main component is the accordion folded HEPA filter sheet, then you have a plastic frame and glue strip to hold the filter sheet in place. On the back is a small foam bead that helps to prevent air from going around the filter sheet itself. This strip compresses against the inside of the Whirlpool AP450/AP510 to create a reasonable seal. The seal is dependent on the front cover attaching and securing properly.

[EDIT: moved 1st paragraph to the end where it should have been. no other changes.]

I ordered the Whirlpool 1183054 Filter and when it arrived it was a cardboard-framed replica of the real Whirlpool filter (which has a plastic frame). I have serious respiratory allergies (hence the air filter?) THIS FILTER STANK of toxic chemical glue! Opening the box caused my entire apartment to smell. I left the filter in an open window for several days, after which it still reeked. I tried to run it in the air purifier to air out the filter, but it caused my bedroom to reek chemical fumes. I had a sinus reaction to the smell. This is not a quality product but an inferior rip-off.

This is an original Whirlpool HEPA filter. Others on the market are not, and are made of lower quality materials. Price was the major factor in purchasing this filter, about $20 cheaper than I could find it locally. Great filter at a great price.

Complete Filtration Services Inc. sells these (both the HEPA filters and the carbon pre-filters) as original Whirlpool filters, but what they send you are cheap aftermarket replacements! (and it says so on their packing sheet)
