First off, I should say that I am very very inexperienced with any sort of repair work. When the washer started leaking, my first thought was "we need to buy a new washer." But first, I searched around a little on the interwebs and learned that my problem was probably either a hose or the water pump. A bad water pump sounded like a big, expensive problem...I prayed it was just a loose hose. (Now I'm thankful it WAS the water pump) I still wanted to avoid any attempts at repairing the washer (because i have no clue what I'm doing), and instead just buy a new one. But I need to learn sometime. So I drank a few beers and looked around on youtube and found an awesome video featuring a washer very similar to mine. It walked me through the process of taking apart the washer and removing and replacing the water pump. It looked so easy! So I took apart the washer and immediately looked around online for an inexpensive replacement part. I found this one for about $15 plus $5 shipping. The pump arrived at me casa in about 4 business days. When it arrived I immediately removed the old, leaky pump (which required a few hits from a hammer), and hammered the new one into place. I put the washer back together, and BAM! All fixed! No more leaks! All in all, it only took about 15-20 minutes! I treated myself to a dinner of champions that night...paid for with the savings I got from purchasing this product instead of a more expensive one from the manufacturer...or calling a repairman! I was the repairman! Woomp Woomp! (The only reason I rated this product a 4 out of 5 instead of a full 5 out of 5 is that I have nothing to compare it to. But for all practical purposes, this product was great..and easy to install!

I wish I had purchased this part from Amazon -- I got mine at the local retail appliance parts warehouse and paid way too much.

Tools I needed once I was able to get to this part of the washing machine:
large flathead screwdriver -- used to pry off the pump retaining clips, and also to help remove the pump from the drive shaft.
Channellock 528 8-Inch Slip Joint Plier -- used to remove and replace the water pump hose clamps
6OZ BALL PEIN HAMMER (with a block of wood) -- used to persuade the new pump into place on the motor drive shaft

Also used some penetrating oil to clean rust off the pump shaft. The failed pump seemed to have a leak in the bearing and water leaked and rusted the shaft. It was probably leaking very slightly for a while before it was noticed. I used Lithium grease on the shaft but would have preferred to use Comp OR-LUBRICANT-SM Food-Grade Silicone O-Ring Lubricant if I had some on hand.

This product was a perfect match to the original equipment. I would advise replacing the clips that hold the pump to the drive housing

I thought I could save a few bucks and order this part vs. the actual Whirlpool part. It's half as much money, but that's the only good thing about it. I installed it approximately 3 weeks ago, and was initially very satisfied with how it was working. The clothes were clean and no water was leaking under my washing machine. My wife was happy and I felt like Superman. This morning, the pump started making a grinding noise. A pool of water emerged from under the machine, and my wife took away my Superman cape. I tipped the machine back to find my newly installed pump was cracked and leaking. I instantly ran to the computer I am now typing on to order the genuine Whirlpool part, in hopes that I can again join the superhero squad before my wife removes the "S" decal from the side of my 2000 Chevy Malibu.
Save your money, buy the genuine part.

PROS:
(1) Shipped and delivered quickly.
(2) Fit and has worked perfectly (so far, ~1 week of heavy use) on my Estate brand (whirlpools cheap branded) washer.

CONS:
(1) None so far.

Will update if any issues arise.

FYI, for those nervous about replacing this themselves (or are considering paying >$200 to have a repairman do it for them), this part is really REALLY easy to replace... I've never opened a washer before, and it literally took 15 minutes from start to finish to replace this part.

I know nothing at all about washers and dryers in terms of fixing them. When our washer began to leak I thought - oh great.... how much do they cost now? So, we went out shopping for a new washer and, to say the least, I had sticker shock. 800-1000 dollars and that was for a mediocre machine! So I told the wife - look, give me 1 weekend to research what's wrong with it and try to fix it. If I can't fix it by the end of the weekend, we'll break down and buy a new washer. She agreed, and so I set out to find out what was wrong with our washer, and why it was leaking. Long story short - it was this part that had failed. So I found instructions on how to replace it, it was SOOOOO EASY to do!!! The entire process took me less than 20 minutes to replace it!!! I was truly amazed!!!

So, for my purchase of this part here is how I benefited:

1. The part is cheap
2. Saved on calling a repair man
3. Saved on buying a new washer
4. Installed in less than 20 minutes
5. Part was a perfect fit

Total savings = At least 200.00 from the repairman, and if we calculate a new washer then it would be at least 800.00 in savings!!!

The part has been installed now for over a month, and there have been no issues at all so far. And even if the part only lasts for 1 year, big deal. Now that I know how to fix it, I'll just buy another one and install it! Next time it will take me 10 minutes ;) To save 800.00 for a new washer????? YOU BETCHA!!!

UPDATE: 02/05/2014 - So, it's been about 4 months now since I first bought and installed this part and I'm happy to say, it's still working perfectly! We do weekly, heavy wash loads as I'm sure most families do. So, this little part certainly gets a workout in our house... all is well, and glad I purchased it rather than giving 800-1000 to the appliance store!
