No headaches. Only great filtered water. The Central Water Filtration System uses patented, performance-proven technology to deliver refreshing, filtered water throughout your entire home. FilterSenseTM Technology The Central Water Filtration System operates using a proprietary filter media bed with activated carbon so there are no filters to replace or maintenance like other whole home products. And unlike other systems, the Central Water Filtration System won't reduce your household water pressure. Using FilterSenseTM Technology, the Central Water Filtration System automatically flushes, cleans and drains its internal filter every 14 days. This thing works. Kind of tricky to install yourself if you are not good with plumbing, but I did it. Hint: Pex tubing and connectors are your friend.

You need to hook the waste water tubing to something to take care of the waste water, I have mine going into the sump well in the basement so the sump pump takes care of it. It also needs an electrical outlet. Once you hook it up you can pretty much forget about it. Nice.

If the power goes out for more than 8 hours, the clock will need to be reset. However, it will still automatically backwash the system every 2 weeks (backwash time and frequency are adjustable, the default frequency is 2 weeks, I set my time for 2am). So, even if you forget to reset the clock, it will still do it's job. It just might do it at a bad time because the clock if off. You will have no water to the house for 3 minutes (also adjustable) while it flushes the system out.

I highly recommend this filter. When I moved into my home I went from a well to city water which was very chlorinated and hard. I installed a Whirlpool WHES-40 Softener and the WHEJL1 Whole House Filter. What a difference! I used to smell chlorine when filling the dogs bowls or washing my face. The smell is gone, my water is nice and soft which means longer life for my new appliances, and GREAT tasting water from any tap without under-sink filters. Worth every penny in my opinion!

RECOMMENDATIONS:
(1) Replace the O-rings with silicone o-rings from your plumbing supply store BEFORE installing;
(2) Install indoors;
(3) Have a professional do the installation;
(4) Do not backflush more than is absolutely necessary to extend useful life; and
(5) Plan on replacing in 10-years or less.

This unit does NOT filter flouride nor chloramine (chlorine+ammonia) -- it filters chlorine great as long as it works.

This is my second WHELJ1 whole house filter. I had my first one professionally installed outdoors, replacing a water softener. Whirlpool says the normal life of these units is 10-years. Presumably by that time under "normal" use the filtration media would need to be replaced. I would have been really happy with that.

We live in an area of heavily chlorinated water, so that was my main focus. When my first filter was installed it was great for about a year. Around the 1- to 1-1/2 year mark, the water started having a bad chemical taste and odor, definately not chlorine and far worse. I contacted Whirlpool, got on with an engineer, and got an RMA to return & replace the unit. That was really great considering it was out of warranty.

I DIY'd the remove & replace with my son, but it was quite a project. Snails love this thing, and it's a lot heavier with water in it! During disassembly of the first filter we discovered the 2-7/8" x 3-1/4" large o-ring (PN 7170296) had disintegrated. We could easily recognize the chemical spoiling the water by the smell. We took the unit back and installed the new replacement.

About 1- to 1-1/2 years later the smell came back, but I had forgotten what caused it.
