4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Unit May 19, 2009
Color Name:White
Got the GX5SHDXV model, similar to the one shown, about a week ago. It was originally $1298 at Lowes, but the floor model had paint scratches, so they marked it down to $1k. Lowes delivered it (an adventure in itself) but I installed it and set it up. So far so good, it's quiet, makes lots of ice quickly, and has the Energy Star qualification that should save $$ on my electric bill.
There is only one gallon storage shelf in the door; I wrote Whirlpool to send me another to replace the can dispenser shelf that I won't use.
The refrigerator drawers slide nicely, as does the freezer compartment drawer.
The paint finish is very good, once I cleaned off all the tape residue from Lowes (why do they do that?) I used auto detailing spray to make it shine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Door Storage Problem June 1, 2010
Color Name:Stainless Steel
I've had my fridge for about 1 month now, and so far it's been working fine. It looks pretty and all, BUT I have to say that I am not very happy with the storage capacity of this fridge. The door bins are curved, so you can fit VERY FEW items in one bin. You can't fit many tall things (i.e. wine bottles after they've been opened) if you have some other things there like milk and/or juice. The coke can dispenser is nice IF YOU DRINK FROM CANS! We don't and there's no way to change out that bin. It's just that my older Kenmore fridge (much cheaper) had a LOT more storage than this one. Too many curves in this model, which really brings down storage capacity. To be honest, the double doors is a pain, too. I'd rather go back to one door.

This was the one item that I did not look at carefully when buying my kitchen appliances. I would certainly not buy it again or recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Whirpool refrigerator January 16, 2013
Color Name:Stainless Steel
Bought this fridge 2 years ago and already had to replace the mother board which was over 200.00 dollars. Contacted whirpool and the only thing they will do is document the complaint. The service man told me he has replaced this board in over 100 refrigerators probably needs to be recalled. Whirpool does not stand behind their product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty control panel after 2 years June 16, 2011
Color Name:White
After 2 years and 2 months we have had to replace the control panel twice (replacement panel was faulty and was replaced at no charge by the appliance repair). Other issues throughout the past 2 years include broken door shelves (we replaced), cheap plastic cheese bin on the very bottom of the fridge is precarious and comes loose, and the rubber gasket around the door is flaking off. We imagine it will need to be replaced within the year. I think this fridge is poorly made and would not recommend it to anyone. Our previous fridge was an Amana with a bottom freezer that was a much better quality. We did quite a bit of research before we purchased this expensive appliance and are very disappointed with it's performance.

Requested that Whirlpool reimburse us for the $240 bill to repair (fridge cost $1500+) but they were not interested in backing their "quality" product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do you like throwing out food? June 18, 2013
Color Name:Stainless Steel
A couple of years ago this fridge had pretty good reviews, so I ignored the warnings and bought it. What could go wrong? I thought people who needed a door alarm must be pretty unconscious. Well, my bad. These doors don't close like single doors; there's a mechanism in the middle and it sometimes keeps the doors from closing. You find out the next morning, when the fridge has given up and everything is warm and ruined.

The freezer has a similar problem. If you fill it good and full, things can block it from closing entirely. . .and again, it shuts off and lets everything thaw. Plus, there seems to be an inherent design flaw that causes ice to form in the freezer back, blocking the drain until water drips out the front. I found a YouTube cure but it could cost if you're not handy with tools.

All this, and I didn't even know about the problems other people have had! To tell the truth, though, I like the design and mine has been pretty reliable. But the lack of a door alarm, coupled with the mechanism that prevents assured closing, is a fatal flaw. You will eventually rush and fail to notice the door isn't quite closed--and there goes a bunch of food. Look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars love it so far December 25, 2010
Color Name:White
finally had it delivered and i love its looks. I LOVE all the space in my fridge compared to the side by side it seems deeper too. It does not make any more noise than my 7 yr old fridgidaire that broke (yes problems after only 7 yrs) Love the sliding freezer drawer...only one minus, I would assume it came with the water dispenser but it doesn't. Glad I really didn't use one or I would have been very disappointed that I didnt research it further

Other than that, sharp looking fridge, cooled soon after turning on and started making ice in 2-3 hours

2.0 out of 5 stars Love the look - Hate the Reliability level June 20, 2013
Color Name:Stainless Steel
I also bought the Whirlpool GX5FHDXVTO about 2.5 years ago. Have been having a problem with the freezer compartment icing up (note we do not have the water or automatic ice maker, so that is not contributing to the issue). The thermostat sensor has been replaced twice in a year and the repair tech is now saying it has got to be the main board--yet no error message code on digital display. He suggested not throwing good money after bad and just get a new fridge. I called Whirlpool and they wouldn't do anything except document the complaint. I also asked for a copy of the main board programming instructions, to which the whirlpool service rep said "there aren't any", that you just unplug to reset--which does not work. I know that you can force a manual defrost per the programming instructions, but I cannot find my instructions to try that (I had a set--was inside the back of the Fridge, found them when we repaired the first time). I would not recommend this product or Whirlpool again.
