4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job - but requires extra work. Product picture is inaccurate., March 30, 2010

The coupler I got is the newer type that has a metal insert around the center hole, and the rubber part is red not black. The product picture depicts the older type of coupler.

The newer type should be better because of the metal insert - the all-plastic part in the older type was too weak and failed. There is one issue wth the new type though: the metal insert has extra material that I had to file off in order to make it fit the shafts of the motor and of the gearbox.

This is the All Plastic OEM style coupler, trust me you don't want the metal sleeved coupler
I'd much rather replace this part 20 times for $5 than to have to replace the Motor $$$$
The metal sleeve versions when they fail can strip the motor drive shaft requiring motor replacement/repair
whereas when the plastic fails, it just breaks and you get a new one for $5

Depending on the instructions you find(this comes with none) this coupler is a tight fit(GOOD) and requires you
to press or tap it onto the shafts, what I did was take the 3 pieces apart and press each white piece on to the shafts
then during installation put the rubber(black) piece on one side and line it up. and done.

It takes longer to move the washing machine away from the wall than it does to do this repair.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not use the coupler with metal reinforcement, September 16, 2011
This review is from: Whirlpool Motor / Pump Drive Coupler 285753
Whirlpool Washer Motor Coupling # 285753AThe original coupler come with the washer do not have a metal insert, it is because the plastic coupler is made to wear out and that is to protect the motor shaft and the transmission shaft. If the metal reinforcement coupler is used, the motor shaft or transmission shaft will wear out. This is a simple engineering design to protect the more expensive parts.
