4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job - but requires extra work. Product picture is inaccurate.
The coupler I got is the newer type that has a metal insert around the center hole, and the rubber part is red not black. The product picture depicts the older type of coupler.

The newer type should be better because of the metal insert - the all-plastic part in the older type was too weak and failed. There is one issue wth the new type though: the metal...

The newer type should be better because of the metal insert - the all-plastic part in the older type was too weak and failed. There is one issue wth the new type though: the metal insert has extra material that I had to file off in order to make it fit the shafts of the motor and of the gearbox.

This is the All Plastic OEM style coupler, trust me you don't want the metal sleeved coupler
I'd much rather replace this part 20 times for $5 than to have to replace the Motor $$$$
The metal sleeve versions when they fail can strip the motor drive shaft requiring motor replacement/repair
whereas when the plastic fails, it just breaks and you get a new one for $5

Depending on the instructions you find(this comes with none) this coupler is a tight fit(GOOD) and requires you
to press or tap it onto the shafts, what I did was take the 3 pieces apart and press each white piece on to the shafts
then during installation put the rubber(black) piece on one side and line it up. and done.

It takes longer to move the washing machine away from the wall than it does to do this repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, January 19, 2011

When my "made by Whirlpool" washer failed last week as the spin cycle began I heaved a sigh and later did a little research online for troubleshooting the problem. I had not yet opened the machine for a look because my space is so limited (especially in winter) but this part was high on the suspect list.

As in past years I started looking at a couple of the large online appliance part portals. They have served me well in the past as a source of parts and information, often sharing free schematics, and I will continue to patronize them when needed because of that kind of support, and the more extensive part availability.

This time though I couldn't resist the excellent savings on this part. At the price of the motor coupling through Amazon I didn't mind gambling that this was the right part, since it meant I had a chance of getting lucky and fixing the machine the first time I opened it up.

As others have said, I found some very helpful video online. I do have a lot of mechanical experience, but I would strongly encourage anyone with a bit of handyman aptitude to do this repair for themselves. I am happy to report that this job did actually take much less than an hour, even with a bit of fumbling and cleaning.

One IMPORTANT NOTE I will emphasize is that the vendor links for this item do not all represent the same item, although they should all work. Each coupler consists of 2 plastic cogs and a center isolator. In the original version of the motor coupler the cogs do not have the thin metal sleeve that fits around the motor shaft. My all-plastic cogs worked for quite a few years before breaking, but many do not, and I must recommend choosing the newer version with the metal sleeve.

However I did encounter what one other user commented, that the new cogs did not easily fit on the shaft. In my case I didn't grind them down, but just firmly drove them onto the shaft using a socket on a wrench extension. Using such force could damage a cog if you aren't careful. Maybe they didn't recast the original plastic cog, but just added the metal insert to the original specification? It's okay because it works. Just want to give a heads up about a possible tight fit.

This product is excellent. This product arrived very fast. There are videos online on how to fix this type of Whirlpool Washer Machine and it's easier than you think. Almost anyone can do it ... and the savings over a repairman doing this has to be in the $200+ range. This product had a reinforced center (the part that goes over the motor shafts) made out of aluminum ... the original DID NOT. This will probably help it survive longer than the previous (original?) part did.

Thanks for making this part available.

Product good. Bought the part WITHOUT the reinforced metal sleeves (couple individuals said not to buy the couplers with metal sleeves). This part did not look as sturdy as the original "Whirlpool" product (but then, u pay 4 times more for the original product).
Would I buy the same product from the same company/Amazon.com? YES!!!

Remember, do it yourself by going to YouTube. I did it and I saved $145. Also remember not to overload your washer!!! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Original Whirlpool coupling assembly #285753, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Whirlpool Motor / Pump Drive Coupler 285753
Don't buy Whirlpool's new coupler Part #285753A with the steel insert!

Use this coupler and not the newer version Part # 285753A. This latest version coupler has steel inserts imbedded in its 2 plastic sections, the idea
being to make it more reliable. I'm afraid this hasn't been the case in practice, so
avoid this one.

I have two reasons for this. First, they are so tight and hard to drive onto the gearcase
and motor shafts, it's hard to install one without damaging the shafts. And because they
are so tight, removal when they do break can also be very difficult.

Secondly, repairmen have started to see them stripping/rounding off the drive flats on motor
shafts, ruining motors - and that's unacceptable! The idea behind any drive 'weak link'
- belt, coupler, etc - is to slip or sacrificially fail when something goes horribly wrong,
to keep from ruining something more major and expensive.

Having to replace an expensive main drive motor due to a $10 drive coupler failure
tells us there's a major problem with this new coupler design with the metal insert. Continue to use Part #285753 which Amazon sells for a few cents more.

No issues. A direct replacement for the OEM coupler with some improvement in design (for durability). I was able to replace it myself with the help of some online instruction.
