UPDATED FEB 2015

I bought this machine in August 2011, and by now I think I have enough experience with it to mention what I believe to be the most important points about its construction and operation.

It seems that this model (or similar) is still being made. It could be sold under Whirpool or Maytag brands. It is a nicely engineered machine, in my opinion. It is small in size and fits under countertop in our bathroom, it is reasonably quiet, does not chew up or tear clothes, even the spin cycle is not as violent as with our previous Malber WD1000. Having three children, we depend on it quite a bit, and for the most part it's done a stellar job.

But - yes, there is a "but" - Whirpool has made some conscious choices to make this machine a money sucker and, ultimately, a failure. How did they do it? Let me close my eyes and imagine a conference room filled with top managers and people from Whirpool sales department. "All right, fellows" - says one manager, "you all know how printer companies make money not by selling printers but by selling ink for those printers at inflated prices." Everyone nods in agreement. "Well then, what can we do, if all we have to sell is this stupid washing machine? And we cannot demand using our special Whirpool detergent or our exclusive Maytag softener!" For a few seconds, there is silence, but then a hand is raised. "Sir" - says one salesperson, - "what if we hid the lint filter? It will fill up, eventually, and the customers will need to call for a service rep to clean it!" Brilliant, Joe!" - says the manager, - "anybody else?" "Umm... yes, what if we stop selling carbon brushes for the drive motor?

If I could give this product zero stars, I would. I HATE this machine, and will never, ever buy Whirpool appliances. This is basically an expensive, disposable piece of junk.

Some background: we live in a large housing complex, so we have to make due with whatever the management office buys "in bulk" under contract. In the three plus years we've lived in our apartment, we've gone through 4 of these machines. No, I'm not kidding--the last one went just last week as our newborn was arriving home--perfect timing. The management office finally decided to replace the Whirpools with GE stackables (when the maintenance guy swears at the mere mention of the Whirpool name, you know there is an issue).

EACH of the machines we've had broke between 8-11 months after being installed brand new. Each one malfunctioned the same mundane way--the fast spin would deteriorate until the machine wouldn't spin out the wash water at the end of the wash cycle, leaving a soggy mess that had to be wrung out by hand. And as other reviewers have stated, the electronics are finicky--often giving cryptic error codes then resolving. On the last machine we had, the door also failed to latch properly at first, requiring multiple tries to get it to "grab" and start the wash cycle. This problem mysteriously went away after a few weeks. And then some months later the fast spin cycle went kaput. Again.

Now, to be fair, it's a small unit, and we did use it quite a bit (about 10 times per week on average). However, we babied them after the first broke, using a lot of quick wash cycles and being very careful to balance the loads, not over-/under-load the machine, etc. I would not expect a machine this costly to break so quickly.

I had a hard time rating the WFC7500VW washer by Whirlpool. It isn't a spectacular piece of equipment - something that is really slick and gives you pleasure just by using it and watching it work. It feels like an average, run of the mill washer that maybe bounces about more than it should at certain brief moments in its cycling. On the other hand, it is one of only a handful of washers that come 24" wide. Choices are very few and my previous washer, one by Kenmore, did an awful job. Clothes were twisted, knotted into permanently wrinkled, mangled messes, not really cleaned and still wet once the cycle was complete no matter how it was loaded. Plus, it never seemed to work at all unless the water level was set to maximum. Now THAT was a piece of junk.

So in the end, I raised the rating up from 3 stars on the Whirlpool because it does a pretty good job cleaning, doesn't knot the clothes up, spins the clothes relatively dry and actually delivers on gentle settings - all in a 24" small package.

One caveat, though - Whirlpool quality control seems chancy. My companion dryer obviously had not been factory tested because the drum couldn't make a revolution without deafening scraping sounds. My washer, sealed from the factory, had some water spots at the back which makes me think it actually went through some factory testing before shipment. I hope it will be trouble free in the long term. I'll edit this review if it runs into problems. I'd be cautious about buying any of these reconditioned or used.
