1.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product at a ripoff price !!
I have bought 2x of these products, and they are excellent. I bought the earlier 450 sq ft model about 5 years ago, and it saved us during the San Diego fires. I bought the 510 model for my mom last christmas, and she just loves hers. 5.0 out of 5 stars Whispure 510 is a Great Air Filter, August 9, 2006
My boyfriend has minor asthma and I live in a small NYC apartment with 3 cats. The cat hair would affect him when he came over to visit - he could not sleep over because in the middle of the night he could no longer breathe properly. I first bought a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze. It did collect some airborne particles but did not help with the cat hair and was not effective enough to help my boyfriend. I have since sold it. I then bought the Whispure 510 and it works wonderfully. I keep it on 24/7. The noise is similar to white noise on low / intermediate for sleeping - not a problem for me or any guests that I have had visit. My boyfriend noticed a difference within about 30 minutes of turning it on. There is also less dust around the place. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geat and quite!, August 16, 2006
By
I have drainage pipe leaks underneath my floor in my apartment, so I have pretty unhealthy fumes. I bought this to take care of the problem and it works great. What I especially like about this unit is that it is exceptionally quiet. I can set on high and only then will I notice it, but even then the sound on that level is so smooth it becomes apart of the environment rendering it unnoticeable. The quality of the unit feels of very high. I was unsure of the digital smash buttons before I bought it, but after using it they seem to be of good quality. What I find really useful is the sleep function, when I go to bed at night I hit the sleep button and it automatically downgrades the speed to a low level, thus saving me the trouble of cycling(pushing the button over and over) to get to the low setting from high or medium. Then, after eight hours it automatically goes back to the previous speed level I had it at. One thing I did not like about this unit though is that the insides of the unit are made of Styrofoam. That makes me kind of eerie on the lifespan of the product, but I am sure it will be fine since Styrofoam is used in helmets. Another grip is that the cord is a little short. But that is it, and my main concern was buying a air purifier that would be quiet and successful at cleaning air at the same time and this one does it. On a side note, a charcoal filter is offered for this unit also to filter out chemicals and I may also buy this in addition to the unit, but I haven't decided yet since I have already shelled out a lot of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, industrial-strength air purifier, May 27, 2007
As a longtime allergy sufferer and former asthmatic, I've had air purifiers around me for years before Sharper Image's 'Ionic Breeze' commercials made them relatively popular. This one is still my favorite in the cost/square foot ratio. It's quiet in the the low settling, annoyingly loud in the top one. The buttons are actually plastic bubble 'smash buttons' instead of real ones, which lend an air of cheapness to the product - though one should note that you really won't be playing with the controls on an air purifier very much.

This machine pulls out a lot of dust and debris from the air via a dual filter system. The first, innermost filter is a moderately expensive one that should be changed 1-2 times per year, depending on if you live in a hospital ward or over a smudge pot factory. The second, outermost one is the carbon pre-filter than catches larger particles and reduces odor.

While I can't judge too much on 'how much odor' it removes, it certainly catches the dust. After 6 months of use, I found it helpful to unplug the purifier, carry out out to the balcony, open it there and then dispose of the dust-coated pre-filter in a garbage bag so that the coating of dust wouldn't slough off into the room again.

The only disadvantage to this particular model is its size; make no mistake, this is one purifier than won't tip over under less than gale force winds. (Whirlpool has thoughtfully built in a handle on the case that helps you when you move it, however.) That makes it tough to keep it hidden away while keeping it in a relatively central position to circulate the air. I'd recommend the rather stylish, slimline 3M Ultra Slim Living Room Air Purifier - FAP04-RC for slightly smaller rooms and keep this one for the large rooms or where you need hardcore air movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY pleased, September 3, 2007
i have found this to be a very favorable machine as it was one of several that my allergy doctor had recommended. i suffer from allergies, chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps making it extremely hard for me to breathe, day or night. in reading consumer reports, the whirlpool 510 ranked best at quietness at low speeds as well as the cadr rating. this machine replaced my ionic breeze machines, which were not at all effective, and i couldn't be more pleased with my whirlpool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and moves a lot of air, August 5, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have purchased two of these air cleaners (one for the office and one for home). The design allows it to fit snuggly against a wall. Even the highest fan speed is relatively quiet. No assembly required and filters are lasting as long as the product claims suggest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product at a ripoff price !!, December 30, 2008

This review is from: Whirlpool Whispure 510 Air Purifier (AP51030K) - HEPA Air Cleaner (Kitchen)
I have bought 2x of these products, and they are excellent. I bought the earlier 450 sq ft model about 5 years ago, and it saved us during the San Diego fires. I bought the 510 model for my mom last christmas, and she just loves hers. It's not very loud, and you can shove it up against a wall, in a corner, without harming its function at all, so despite being rather big and boxy, it need not take up much space. I use ours sometimes as a coffee table. My mom shoved hers up against her dresser by the doorway, so it doesn't consume any usable floor space in her apartment. The large intake is on one side, at it shoots the fresh air straight up into the room, so pushing it against a wall doesn't harm its function.

There is no magic to this product. You need a large and powerful fan, and a large surface area, for a HEPA filter to work well. This is one of the largest of the large! The large surface area allows the fan to work at low RPM and makes it quieter. The settings are OFF-Speed1-Speed2-Speed3. The most powerful Speed3 is only moderately loud. We use this filter to clean our whole downstairs, which is about 1000 sq ft. No filter on the market is more muscular than this one.

I would normally rate this (*****) (5 stars), but the street price for this discontinued product was always $230-$300. I cannot understand why this retailer is asking for 5x-6x the normal price. So, based on value for money, I have to rate this product 1 star, at a price of $1295.00. This is a discontinued product, but heck, $1295 is just a ridiculous price and they are sucking the blood from innocent people with allergies. The price stinks, and even this excellent product cannot clean away THAT stench ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really works for cat allergies!, July 31, 2007
I suffer from severe cat allergies and yet found myself engaged to a woman who owns 2 cats. I had no idea of what we were going to do, then I stumbled across Crazy Canuck's review and decided to try the Whispure 510 myself.

I can now sleep peacefully in the same room with my fiancee's cats. As an added bonus she suffers from asthma herself despite not having any cat allergies and has noticed improvement in her asthma as well. If you or a loved one suffer from any kind of animal allergies BUY THIS PRODUCT! It really works every bit as good as advertised.

And thanks much to the Crazy Canuck for her review that persuaded me to try this thing myself. This gadget is worth every penny!

Excellent filter - quiet and effective. But purchase it from National Allergy Supply for substantially less than from here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whisper quiet, works great!!!, May 6, 2008
By

This is by far the quietest air purifier I have owned.
I was searching for a new air purifier for my home and was prepared to spend upwards of $600 on a new unit.
I live with a bird and three dogs, so I needed something powerful - I honestly didn't care about the noise because the one I already owned made my apartment sound like a vortex. Anyway, I read on consumer reports that the Whispure was rated the highest, and the price was half what I was prepared to spend. I ordered one and have been using it a week - AMAZING. On the turbo setting it is quieter than my other one is on low! And it works great. I peeked at the carbon filter after a few days and it is definitely sucking in dust, dander, and other unpleasantries. I am sleeping better, not waking up coughing for three hours, and there is noticeably less dust on the surfaces in my home. Normally I clean once a day to keep dust and dander down, I was able to wait almost a week with the Whispure running!!!

It has a great "sleep" mode which puts the unit on low (I cannot hear it at all if I am standing a foot away) for 8 hours then returns to the last setting.

It's lightweight, easy to move, solidly constructed, filter changing is easy, and its definitely better looking than the other units I have owned. It also produces NO ozone!

After learning about the serious dangers of ozone emitting units, my family and friends are tossing their ozone producing purifiers and ordering the Whispure based on my glowing reviews. I love this machine!!! It has really impressed me. There's a reason this Whirpool doesn't need all the hype to sell this machine - it actually does what it promises, it works and it's whisper quiet. Thanks Whirpool!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, October 29, 2007

Simply put, this air purifier does a great job.

I bought this for a basement that is approximately 540 square foot. The goal was to keep the air clean enough to have a work out room in the basement. We have a cat whose litter box is also in the basement so I hoped this would remove the litter box odor as well as any dust. It has done a fantastic job. I run it overnight two to three times per week and it does a wonderful job. The only downside is the price of the filters. They are quite expensive.

I'd highly recommend this unit.
