Product Description

Tower Air Purifier from the #1 Doctor Preferred Brand. True HEPA filtration captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. Removes airborne allergens such as dust, pet dander, pollen, tobacco smoke, fabric fibers and mold spores from rooms up to 200 square feet. LCD electronic control features an Auto Mode which automatically sets fan speed to one of three speeds based on air quality. VOC-SENSE detects volatile organic compounds, gases and fumes. A charcoal pre-filter reduces VOCs, traps odors and pre-cleans the air before it reaches the HEPA filter. Sleep Mode and up to 18-hour countdown timer. AHAM Certified CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate). ENERGY STAR Qualified.

Customer Reviews

The low speed mode is very quiet.

It does make a white noise sound, but on low, very minimal and soothing ( but I use white noise to sleep).

This has made a significant difference in my allergy symptoms.

I'd been suffering from sinus infection, itchy skin, dry eyes. So, I bought a basic air purifier. Seemed to improve my issues a bit, but not much.

Then I got the Whispure & thanks to the VOC-sensor, I knew exactly when my air was 'going bad'. Every time I'd get ready for bed, some 'volatile compound' was detected. After some trial & error, I found that the VOC-sensor would tick-up every time I made my bed. So, I changed both my detergent and my sheets every other day. Still, shortly after getting in bed, some volatile compound sent this machine into 3rd gear. Difficult to sleep knowing you're in a toxic room. Without the sensor, I'd have no way of knowing.

Frustrated, I finally ripped the sheets off of and brushed my (3-month old) mattress. ...Click-click - Whispure started working over time.

My new memory foam mattress was the problem. I had an allergic reaction to it. Turns out, the chemicals used in many new mattresses (particularly memory foam) can cause varying degrees of allergic reactions. I was ready to chalk it up to random allergies, being 40, diet, detergents. Needless to say, I returned the mattress.

If it hadn't been for the Whispure's VOC-sensor, I never would've known about my toxic mattress. I'd be running around like a chicken w/my head cut off, talking to doctors who'd think I'm paranoid. I'd continue to be sick, even after changing diet, detergent, sheets... vacuuming more often.

This isn't the only unit w/a VOC-sensor. I also like that Whispure has an indicator light for both the pre-filter and the primary filter, so there's no need to guess. There's also no need to keep buying new ones. It runs fairly quiet at speed one. At speed three, air shoots out with some power behind it like I've never seen from a purifier.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
It's been about a week since this arrived, so I've had time to evaluate it properly. The first thing to understand is this is not an 800 dollar air cleaner. I am rating and reviewing this against other units in its price range. Actually, this is the third unit in this class that I have reviewed. The other two were from Honeywell and Hoover.

I can't say any one of them is "better" than the other. I like all of them.

The Whirlpool Whispure Tower Air Purifier- HEPA Air Cleaner, APT40010R is a "room air purifier," not a whole house air purifier. However, it is a "medium room" unit. On the box, it says it will filter a 197 sq ft room up to 4.8 times per hour. I turned it on its max setting, and find that claim completely believable.

Be careful when comparing these numbers among units. Filtering 197 sq ft 4.8 times per hour isn't inferior to filtering 230 sq ft 2.2 times per hour. You'll need to look at total CFM per hour if max filtering is your concern (it really should not be, unless you happen to enjoy the sound of fans running full blast).

There is a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate), but does the AHAM seal from cadr.org get awarded after rigorous independent testing (as with UL), or is this just self-reported? On its Website, the organization says nothing about a standard testing protocol, independent testing, or anything else that permits a reliably valid comparison. My advice here is to use this number as a general indication for the area size. If one unit has a CADR of 125 and another has a CADR of 150, I would consider that an insignificant difference among units produced by different manufacturers.

In this price range, you're not going to get a whole house HEPA filter.

Overall this is a great product. I knocked off one star for a slightly less airflow compared with the larger square unit. Also for slightly loud on the highest setting. (not major, but I wouldn't be able to sleep with it on that setting, or watch TV without upping the volume)

Some fans make a soothing noise. Three people in my house sleep with white noise machines and we fight over them if one of us is traveling.
I am not sure how to quantify it exactly, but some fans are make a very much NOT soothing noise. The noise of exhaust fan in our kitchen, for example makes everyone edgy and miserable. Somehow everyone in my family responds to both fans the same way, so I have to think its something inherent in the quality of fan noise.
The noise the fan in this air purifier makes falls into the second category; It is frenetic and annoying. I can't be in the room with it on high. That defeats its effectiveness significantly.
I bought the bigger Whirlpool Whispure APK510 30K for my son's room, and that unit has a lovely, soothing fan noise. I chose this purifier instead for my own room because of its aesthetics. I wish I'd bought the big one for myself.
Does it filter the air? Hard to tell. After four months, there is visible dust on the filter, but not enormous amounts. My allergy symptoms are the unchanged. My son's 510 has more dust/etc. on the filter than this one, but probably because I am not tempted to turn his down and turn it off all the time.
I doubt the VOC sensor works, as it did not respond a bit to a brand new memory foam pillow held next to it, but that wasn't a huge selling point for me.
If you're split between the 510 and this, I'd definitely recommend the 510. Or better yet, do you want a very gently used 410010R and I'll replace mine?
