Series just keeps getting better, December 2, 2009
This review is from: Whirlwind (Dreamhouse Kings) (Hardcover)
David's trapped in a crypt with no exit. Unarmed Xander's facing off with a knife wielding Taksidian. Dad's stranded away from both of his boys with a run down car and two slashed tires. Jesse's in ICU, struggling to survive a brutal stabbing. Mom's still missing. That's where the major characters were when Timescape ended, and that's exactly where Whirlwind begins. No one is in a particularly good situation and events seem to be spiraling in a decisively negative direction. How will any of them escape their current situation in order to survive another day? After a six month wait, it's good to finally know.
The Dreamhouse King series is an amazing group of books. I keep thinking at some point Liparulo has to take a step backwards and the next one will not be as good as the previous one. After all, how can he keep improving when each book seems to be about as good as it can get? But yet again, he's managed to write a spectacular book that heightens the already present tension and takes the reader on another thrilling adventure.
As with the previous books, the King family is trying desperately to make sense out of their odd house in order to find their mom. This time they get to learn a few more facts about the house and discover a different way to move between worlds. As expected, Whirlwind provides more pulse pounding adventure, traveling in the histories. They visit some areas they are already familiar with as well as face a couple of new challenges including Hannibal's army in the Alps. Poor David--nothing like showing up to a battle in the Alps, shirtless with a belly scraped raw by a life endangering tumble. If all that's not enough excitement, we finally learn from where and when Taksidian came. It's a surprising piece of information that doesn't make the wait till the next book any easier.
Liparulo has again embedded some sweet themes into the story. A great one this time, is intervening to prevent evil or hurtful acts. The quote at the beginning of the book is Edmund Burke's, "All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing." This statement is woven through the story and leaves a lasting impression. This idea also spawns another, what are we willing to personally sacrifice in order to help others? There are other equally strong concepts that run through several of the books. Liparulo has done a great job of blending these into his story without belaboring a point or `dumbing' it down. This series is marketed to young adults, but the topics within are worthy of everyone's consideration.
There isn't a lot of downtime in Whirlwind and it concludes with yet another cliffhanger. Six more months and we should find out how it ends. In the mean time, though, it's another excruciatingly long wait.

Prepared To Be Terrified, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Whirlwind (Dreamhouse Kings) (Hardcover)
So what would your family do if your mom was kidnapped and dragged--kicking and screaming--through a portal to the past hidden in your attic? Not to mention having to deal with a sadistic murderer intent on having you be the next to contribute a body part to the grotesque statue in his house.
Whirlwind, by far the best in the series so far, is definitely not something to take lightly. It'll have you totally freaked out and sweating from horrifying beginning to cliff-hanger ending. Prepare for a night of incredible thrills.
The Dreamhouse Kings, the first true horror series in the Christian YA genre, is a smash hit.

Insane Thrill Master Fixing Things!, December 17, 2009
This review is from: Whirlwind (Dreamhouse Kings) (Hardcover)
What will he do next? That is the insane question of Thrill Master, Robert Liparulo. And with some of the best company on his side, R.L. Stine joins that mix with an endorsement to die for! Robert Liparulo proves once again to be the author to look for as some hearty competition in this world of thrilling YA fiction. As expected, TIMESCAPE left us with questions, just like it should have. Welcome to WHIRLWIND!!!
Xander and David are on a desperate mission to find their Mother, wherever she may have been taken. And as the suspense increases, the pace only continues to pick up! Dad has his ideas, and Keal has proven to be a worthy guardian, provided he can keep the boys away from danger. But a message from Jesse keeps the boys fixed on the task at hand, and leaving them obligated to do whatever it takes! And the evil Taksidian always has his ideas, even in the company of a cozy cafe, there is always a demented reason to talk about things on his terms. AND THEN...
Well, as you can guess, they story's not quite over. Liparulo always makes it worth my time to crack open his latest, and I don't see a reason to stop now! He delivers his thrills at stunning paces, with the right amount of humor and humility to tug at the heart from time to time. Robert Liparulo has me thrilled once again, and without a doubt, he's got his readers in a FRENZY as to what might come next! Thanks, man!!
