Mary Dunleavy hoped she would never see the infuriating cowboy who saw her at her worst, but Zane Brody is a fellow passenger on the train taking her to Laramie where she will be the town schoolteacher. He even lives in that town. Still, it could be worse, and indeed, it gets that way rapidly. First, Indians board the train and take Mary's doctor brother away with them to cure their chief. So, Mary decides to horse-nap Zane's thoroughbred and find her sibling. Naturally, he comes after her and the two, along with a goat named for the devil, decide to try and rescue the doctor. Before they can, other Indians capture them so they can have someone to torture. Although Mary manages to escape, she knows she can't leave the man she has come to love trapped.
*** Zane and Mary hurtle from one misadventure to another without stopping. Though the scenes at the Indian camp tend to have a very graphic feel, there is not much actually "shown". Ms. Holby is adept at painting scenes by implication. It's refreshing to find a romance that does not go too far into the red zone. *** Amanda Killgore

Satisfying conclusion to the "Wind" series,

This review is from: Whirlwind (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Zane, handsome hero of the Lynch Ranch, can't seem to get away from trouble even when Jenny sends him to fetch her new prize brood mare. His favorite Soiled Dove wants his head, constant pain makes him suspect that she left him with more than fond memories, and nobody told him about the bonus buy included with the mare - the Goat From Hell, aptly named Lucifer. Will his rotten luck ever break?
Schoolteacher Mary, widowed by the war, is eager for a new start - but her journey to her new job involves an annoying traveling companion, his baggage, and the dangers of the western frontier. This newest novel in Cindy Holby's "Wind" series treats her many fans to an old-fashioned Old West adventure that's sure to thrill, as well as provide a satisfying conclusion to the saga. Also recommend her new fantasy series, written under the name Colby Hodge. Check out "Stargazer" and its sequel "Shooting Stars" which comes out this fall. Moms can share Ms. Holby's universe with her Young Adult novel, "Obsessing Orlando" which is written under Kassy Taylor.

delightful western romance,
This review is from: Whirlwind (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1867 Laramie, Wyoming Territory, following a roll with Maybelle, Zane Brody reflects on how his friends are all recently married. Chase has Jenny (see WIND OF THE WOLF); Ty is wed to Cat (see CROSSWINDS); Cole and Grace make a nice couple (see CROSSWINDS); Jake and Shannon (SEE WINDFALL) are together; and now Caleb has married Amanda (see FORGIVE THE WIND). Only he remains single and though he ponders marriage, he likes his carefree life as the centerfold of hunks.
Indians raid the train that was bringing new schoolteacher Mary Dunleavy and her doctor-brother to Wyoming. Zane finds himself wanting to help Mary rescue her sibling taken captive by the Indians. However, their efforts go astray when they become prisoners too. After escaping, they fall in love, but neither feels worthy of the emotion so they hide how they feel from one another. WHIRLWIND is a delightful western romance that completes the Wind saga. The story line is at its best when it concentrates on the lead couple especially during humorous interludes like a goat assaulting the hero. The final pairing is a delight as two independent souls battle love, one another, and rogues. Though too many flashbacks slow down the tale, Cindy Holby provides a fun finish to a saga that started several years ago (see CHASE THE WIND). Harriet Klausner
