When CTI Records could not comprehend Deodato's huge success with Prelude, his career stalled. His shift to MCA Records gave the fusion world this all-time masterpiece and first release under his new label that could have faired better on the sound engineering side which did not give much sheen to the tracks, hence 4 stars. The Japanese remaster from MCA Victor did justice in salvaging an improved re-issue from the original lack-lustre release. Otherwise, this would be full marks with multi-dexterous drummer Billy Cobham (of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame) and guitarist John Tropea at the fore of the star session attractions. Deodato will not settle for less when it comes to top notch session players for his ever essential horns, strings and flute sections either. Recommended tracks: Moonlight Serenade, West 42nd Street, Whirlwinds.

I still have very clear and fond memories of my high-school days (ca.1971-1975) when we would listen to eumir's prelude and whirlwind vinyl albums. the popcorn sound didn't matter if you're listening to a totally exhilirating artist. if my memory serves me right, deodato also had master- pieces like superstrut and skyscraper. maybe some one else can send comments and details on these two titles so i can add them to my collection. deodato is extremely talented. i can spend the rest of the day just listening to his music. i wish i can buy this cd very soon.

Deodato was instrumental to my love of JAZZ music. He took classic hits like MOONLIGHT SERENADE, 2001 Space Odyssey and placed "JAZZ LIFE" into it. I can still hear it in my memories as I was growing up in my home country Philippines which brings back a lot of wonderful memories. I intend to get his albums that have this selection and pass onto the next generation. My salute to great artist and wish he would record and spread his music more.Gerard Luis Z. Ledesma

A not well known record of Deodato,

Track 4 seems to be the best. In this record, Deodato plays between the sound of "Prelude" and the sound of "Very together." The result is ambiguous.

Upon leaving CTI after the artistically satisfying but commercially dismal Deodato 2 Eumir Deodato jumped ship to MCA and 'Whirlwinds' was the fruit of his labor,if you will. This album generally follows the same half covers/half originals formula of Deodato's two CTI recordings, the main difference being that the usual CTI musicians do not appear on this album so the approch of the music is somewhat different. The best way to describe this is relaxing grooves;generally speaking this album is jazz-funk based but as usual Deodato chooses cover material very atypical for the genre;"Moonlight Serenade" gets the same treatment as the theme from 2001 that made Deodato a big name to start with."Ave Maria" truly gets the once over;this normally Christmas associated hymn is transformed into an emotional ballad straight out of the early 70's Atlantic/Jerry Wexler soul school. "Do It Again" ligtens the slightly psychedelic aspect of the Becker/Fagan original with a more cinematic feel-might be a bit light for some Steely Dan fanatics but it's still cool. On the remaining three originals Deodato really mixes it up with some streetwise latin-funk grooves such as "West 42'nd Street","Havana Strut" and the spectacular title song. It's a pity this recording only now in print in the form of expensive import editions because this is one of many fine Deodato albums recorded in the early to mid 70's and something that everyone who enjoy the music of the 70's in general will surely enjoy!
