A whirly romance with a troubled dancer based on a true story,
By
This review is from: Whirlygirl (DVD)
James, a New England teenager in prep school goes on a wild goose chase trying to retrieve a watch from an exotic dancer who stole it from him while performing at his schol. Alice, aka Whirlygirl, becomes a source of fixation for James. Not only does he go from straight to crooked but is caught in a bizarre whirlwind romance and the chaos of Alice's life. Alice, a former teenage runaway, is mixed up with equally dangerous people, a controlling sugar daddy, a stalker in the military, and demons from her broken family relationships. Alice lives in a dive, dances in a strip club, while James is on his way to an Ivy League school and life. James and Alice get more intertwined causing James to get into trouble at achool and risk his own future plans. In the end, Alice learns from James' middle class values and turns her life around before going to a new town to start over. James stays behind to finish school and lets Alice go to have her fresh start. Based on a true story which is enough to make the viewer wonder what happened next.

Im not going to recap the entire story for you... I find that sometimes ruins the film, in my opinion. While this movie has a well written, and substantially original storyline that kept my eyes glued to the screen, the quality of the newcomer talents in the film (Julian Morris, Monet Mazur)is top-notch. In fact, I would go so far as to say Julian Morris is perhaps the best new face I've seen in years (if you look on imdb, he has one of the most enviable resume's ever, working for the royal shakespeare company etc., albeit in the U.K.). I preferred this coming of age story, easily, to The Dead Poets Society and the like. Wasn't too fond of the actor who plays Julian's room-mate, but im not going to give it less than a great review because of such a small part... I URGE absolutely anybody to see this film... And this is not a recommendation I make lightly... in fact, this is the FIRST time I've felt compelled to take the time to write a review online.

Seeing a fantastic price on this film, I just had to buy regardless of what it was. I had no expectations, as I knew nothing of the theme, characters, actors, etc. It turns out it is a fairly good film about college, the "girl of our dreams", and dealing with not finding, or marrying, Mr.(or Ms.) Right. Monet Mazur is so gorgeous that my thesaurus fails me...she is supposed to be the form(perfection) of the unobtainable college girl, and she achieves that. The male lead pines for her the whole film, continually trying to be with her, see her, help her. In the old days, this was regarded as love. His efforts get him close to the unobtainable, but in the end...I won't ruin it for you. Overall, if you had no expectations of the film, it is quite adequate and succeeds in its small aspiration as being a "coming of age"film, albeit in college.
