About the Author

Jeff Phillips bounced around a lot growing up, having been born in Jackson, MI, and moving to Saginaw, MI to Pittsburgh, PA to Auburn, ME. His playtime activity was making movies using the family camcorder, which developed his love for writing and acting. After high school he moved to Chicago to receive his B.A. in Theatre at Columbia College-Chicago. In 2006 he co-founded Three Leaves Productions with Daniel Mac Rae and set to work shooting a short film, Growing Out of Us, which Phillips co-wrote and acted in. They went on to shoot The Antimonk, Terra Incognita, and The Principles. They have also produced several plays in his old storefront apartment, The Manor, of which Phillips acted in dual roles as Walter Nordman and Jerry Thompson in Magnets and Paul in Division & Shame. Phillips and Mac Rae co-wrote The Drowning Exercises. He has worked closely with filmmaker James N. Kienitz Wilkins, having acted in Nature Mature, Jeremy Goes to the Beach, and Public Hearing. Phillips has been a regular contributor to the Seeding Meat publication series produced by XIII Pocket, a Chicago production group dedicated to original works, of which Phillips is a member of their artistic ensemble. He has also written for the Three Leaves publication, Bellows. He released his first book, Whiskey Pike in the summer of 2009 and his second book Turban Tan in the late fall of 2009. In August of 2010 he workshopped his play Bosto at the DCA Studio Theatre in Chicago as part of their Incubator Series for the development of new works. Jeff Phillips is active with the Chicago comedy group, Wood Sugars Comedy in writing, producing and performing for film, live sketch shows, and for their variety show podcast Inside the Barrel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whiskey Pike review by Jeff Phillips, March 25, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
I read Whiskey Pike in bed before going to sleep one night. First, very dark, then hopeful/success and then tragedy/melancholy feel at the end. I will say that I believe the book is about much more than whiskey and distilling innovation. To me, Bowermaster was a dreamer and entrepreneur who did what most cannot. That is, execute a dream successfully into not only a successful, profitable business, but a career that a least for a time, brought happiness to his family and himself. However, as in life, sometimes circumstances, sheer luck and perhaps equally important, the consequences of past actions/habits/bad behavior come back to haunt a presumed happy path.

I'm no literary critic, but I did enjoy Mr. Phillip's use of the English language and for some reason a particular description of the moon as a "fingernail sliver" was very creative to me. Thank you Jeff Phillips. Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Volume 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars a new genre entirely, October 28, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
The pleasure of reading Whiskey Pike is due not entirely to the fact that it is unlike anything I've read before. Phillips has managed to navigate a space between adult and children's fiction-- creating what is, as described, "a bedtime story for adults." His language is descriptive and fluid, full of original metaphors and arresting descriptive passages of his characters and the environments in which they reside. The story itself manages to be both tongue-in-cheek and heartbreaking. Can't wait to see what comes next from this new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story for advocates of good characters and good booze, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
Not only have I read "Whiskey Pike" myself but I've also had the pleasure of experiencing the insightful author, Jeff Phillips, narrate this enjoyable bedtime story at a book reading. This fictional tale held my attention from beginning to end and developed my sentiment for each character. The language Phillips uses makes a perceivably dysfunctional family seem endearing. A quick read, this book is exactly as it is described: "A bedtime story for the drinking mankind." I would enjoy reading this book many more times, but next time I would make sure to have a glass of Jim Beam by my side.
