5.0 out of 5 stars Whiskey Pike review by Jeff Phillips, March 25, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
I read Whiskey Pike in bed before going to sleep one night. First, very dark, then hopeful/success and then tragedy/melancholy feel at the end. I will say that I believe the book is about much more than whiskey and distilling innovation. To me, Bowermaster was a dreamer and entrepreneur who did what most cannot. That is, execute a dream successfully into not only a successful, profitable business, but a career that a least for a time, brought happiness to his family and himself. However, as in life, sometimes circumstances, sheer luck and perhaps equally important, the consequences of past actions/habits/bad behavior come back to haunt a presumed happy path.

I'm no literary critic, but I did enjoy Mr. Phillip's use of the English language and for some reason a particular description of the moon as a "fingernail sliver" was very creative to me. Thank you Jeff Phillips. Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Volume 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars a new genre entirely, October 28, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
The pleasure of reading Whiskey Pike is due not entirely to the fact that it is unlike anything I've read before. Phillips has managed to navigate a space between adult and children's fiction-- creating what is, as described, "a bedtime story for adults." His language is descriptive and fluid, full of original metaphors and arresting descriptive passages of his characters and the environments in which they reside. The story itself manages to be both tongue-in-cheek and heartbreaking. Can't wait to see what comes next from this new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story for advocates of good characters and good booze, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
Not only have I read "Whiskey Pike" myself but I've also had the pleasure of experiencing the insightful author, Jeff Phillips, narrate this enjoyable bedtime story at a book reading. This fictional tale held my attention from beginning to end and developed my sentiment for each character. The language Phillips uses makes a perceivably dysfunctional family seem endearing. A quick read, this book is exactly as it is described: "A bedtime story for the drinking mankind." I would enjoy reading this book many more times, but next time I would make sure to have a glass of Jim Beam by my side.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid believable characters, October 8, 2009
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
Some relationships last out of a kind of weary stubbornness to hang on because what else can I do? Here swap offs of indulgences seem to keep this marriage secure. "Don't ask, don't tell" "Never let the left hand know what the right hand is doing" and "it's nobody's business" seem to be old Yankee values that Phillips uses to weave his mesmerizing tale of a couple who start with a simple still and become well off selling whiskey but using too much of their own product.A simple couple, "nuthin special", they work hard to develop a little innocent mooonshine operation into a viable legal product from a simple garden plot in subsistent level survival that they find a way to make it pay.It wouldn't provide enough food, but it would provide enough money to run a still. All the hardworking American values are here, but the unknown here is their own product. Characters are crystal clear, plain, simple folks and their seduction is fascinating. It could and does happen, tragically. Phillips kept me spellbound and I read it in one sitting.-Charles Berry

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I bought this book!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
This story was a touching and poetic read. I was engaged by the relationships of these characters and found myself relating to the madness that "whiskey" can bring us too. Filled with great imagery, Phillips is an amazing writer and I can't wait for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Legend of Drink and Making Drink, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Whiskey Pike: A Bedtime Story for the Drinking Mankind. (Paperback)
Whiskey Pike will transport your psyche to the Bowermaster homestead, where alcohol is more than a commodity- it's an existence. Through the entrancing storytelling of Jeff Phillips, the story channels the timeless yearning of the human to harness the land and the land to harness the human, through a powerful agent of humanity- whiskey! The reader is quickly consumed by the narratives of rustic fermentation, vivacious dialogue, and a do-it-yourself dreamer. Whiskey Pike is an analogue to your favorite beverage- chuggable and intoxicating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good one night read, January 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's as it states, a bed-time story. It's short and can be read in one night so it's fun that way. Not for children though as it deals with alcoholism etc.
