Book Description

The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries September 8, 2005
Still reeling from her husband's death, thirty-three-year-old realtor Whiskey Mattimoe is adjusting to a new life, which includes the embarrassing purse-snatching antics of her mischievious Afghan hound. That's bad for business, but not as bad as having clients die on the premises. When one of her properties turns into a murder scene, Whiskey becomes hopelessly tangled in a devious scheme involving identity fraud and priceless art.

Dodging a house fire, break-ins, and attempts on her life, Whiskey manages to keep her sense of humor throughout the chaos with help from a part-time police force, her eight-year-old neighbor, and other eccentric characters in the Lake Michigan resort town of Magnet Springs.

This fast-paced, darkly comic tale is the first in a series of mysteries featuring the amateur sleuthing of Whiskey Mattimoe.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in the small resort town of Magnet Springs, Mich., Wright's diverting debut introduces Whiskey Mattimoe, a recently widowed 30-something real estate broker. Things are pretty slow in Magnet Springs, until an out-of-towner drops dead at a local massage parlor. Pricklier still, the mystery man's wife shows up in Magnet Springs to tie up loose ends—and is bludgeoned to death in the house she just happens to be renting from Whiskey. Throw in dognapping and art forgery, and it's quite a caper. Unfortunately, the denouement is so complicated and depends on so many coincidences that readers will need to take notes to keep track of all the details. Still, this is a fun read, and if Wright can simplify things a bit, she'll have a cozy series as satisfying as a fine single malt. (Sept.)

Review

"Sprightly humor, delightful characters (including animals), and a nicely mixed-up plot make this an entertaining debut."

More about Nina Wright . . .

With an undergraduate degree in theater and two master's degrees (in English literature and applied linguistics), Nina has taught creative writing, playwriting, speech, drama, English literature, and English as a Second Language to adults and teens.

Born in northwest Ohio, Nina learned from Lake Erie and her patient father how to swim, ice skate, sail, and fish. Her father also encouraged her to laugh and tell stories. Today Nina's favorite place is a beach almost anywhere. She likes to bike and hike, too. Nina's affection for coastal Michigan, central West Virginia, and magical St. Augustine, Florida, is evident in the settings of her novels.

Because she was an actor and playwright before she wrote fiction, Nina learned her craft by studying what works on the stage: revealing truth through dialogue and action. A playwright must instantly draw the audience into the world of the drama and hold them there until the house lights come up at the end.

Nina continues to write plays as well as fiction. Her latest full-length dramedy, ON MY BOYFRIENDS' BICYCLES, is ideally suited to small theatres with minimal production capabilities. Interested producers and directors may contact her through her website.

A storyteller committed to both page and stage, Nina enjoys teaching others to explore their passions and find their voices; she leads customized workshops for writers of all ages. Nina regularly posts on Facebook and Twitter as well as her blogs. She welcomes input from readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funny..., June 8, 2006
This review is from: Whiskey on the Rocks (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) (Paperback)
Nina Wright's Whiskey on the Rocks is my new favorite mystery. It's so funny but at the same time a very complex mystery. Whiskey, a realtor in Michigan, is still recovering from the tragic death of her husband and coping with the well meaning friend's attempts to help her. The antics of her Afghan Hound Abra to her young next door neighbor/dog trainer are so hilarious I had to read them twice (I laughed too much the first time). Rarely does a book make me laugh and investigate a mystery at the same time. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical chick lit mystery; this one is BETTER!, May 5, 2006

Whiskey Mattimoe is a funny, complex heroine distracted by the recent death of her husband and the antics of her incorrigible dog. If you've ever had a bad dog--or a long series of bad days!--you'll love this fast-paced, laugh-out-loud mystery.

The Lake Michigan resort setting is fun, too: dramatic dunes, deep forests, sandy beaches, big blue-green water. Having lived in that area, I can vouch for the writer's accuracy. She gets all the local color, including the mix of resident artists and other eccentrics, just right. I can't wait to read the second book in the series, "Whiskey Straight Up."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Toast to Whiskey!, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Whiskey on the Rocks (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) (Paperback)
What a fun, fast paced, read! This book is hard to put down. The characters are, well, characters, but believable. I am sure we all know someone just like the majority of them. As for the setting, I am now inspired to go visit western Michigan!
