Book Description

The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries August 8, 2009

Whiskey Mattimoe's Afghan hound Abra has many talents: stealing purses, consorting with criminals, and farting, to name a few. Now, Abra's been chosen to participate in the prestigious Midwest Afghan Hound Specialty in Amish country . . . as a Worst-in-Show example of how not to train an Affie.

Suddenly, a prize-winning pooch disappears, an owner is murdered, and a handler turns up dead. The sleepy community's rustic charm is replaced by ruthless threats. Then Abra vanishes, too. Back at Whiskey's office, suspicious e-mails circulate. Could her colleagues be involved in the canine crimes? Something doesn't smell right—and this time it's not the dog.

Praise for the Whiskey Mattimoe Mystery series:
"Sprightly humor, delightful characters (including the animals), and a nicely mixed-up plot make this an entertaining debut."
Library Review (starred review)

". . . a cozy series as satisfying as a fine single malt."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the outset of Wright's frothy fifth cozy to feature Magnet Springs, Mich., realtor Whiskey Mattimoe (after 2008's Whiskey and Water), Whiskey agrees to enter her thieving diva dog, Abra, in the Midwest's Afghan Hound Show as the Education Dog or Bad Example. On the way to the show in Elkhart, Ind., breeder Susan Davies, who invited Whiskey and Abra, and Susan's co-breeder are shot at in their car. Soon after Whiskey arrives, breeder Mitchell Slater is shot dead. Meanwhile, Whiskey copes with bouts of the flu (or is it, gulp, morning sickness?) and frets about her affair with her singer ex-husband, Jeb Halloran. Dog show fans will find much to grin about, but sometimes the action gets too silly, and some readers may wonder why the neglectful celebrity parent of Whiskey's crime-solving eight-year-old sidekick, Chester, isn't reported to Child Protection Services. More about Nina Wright . . .

With an undergraduate degree in theater and two master's degrees (in English literature and applied linguistics), Nina has taught creative writing, playwriting, speech, drama, English literature, and English as a Second Language to adults and teens.

Born in northwest Ohio, Nina learned from Lake Erie and her patient father how to swim, ice skate, sail, and fish. Her father also encouraged her to laugh and tell stories. Today Nina's favorite place is a beach almost anywhere. She likes to bike and hike, too. Nina's affection for coastal Michigan, central West Virginia, and magical St. Augustine, Florida, is evident in the settings of her novels.

Because she was an actor and playwright before she wrote fiction, Nina learned her craft by studying what works on the stage: revealing truth through dialogue and action. A playwright must instantly draw the audience into the world of the drama and hold them there until the house lights come up at the end.

Nina continues to write plays as well as fiction. Her latest full-length dramedy, ON MY BOYFRIENDS' BICYCLES, is ideally suited to small theatres with minimal production capabilities. Interested producers and directors may contact her through her website.

A storyteller committed to both page and stage, Nina enjoys teaching others to explore their passions and find their voices; she leads customized workshops for writers of all ages. Nina regularly posts on Facebook and Twitter as well as her blogs. She welcomes input from readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of laughs & surprises, July 22, 2009
This review is from: Whiskey with a Twist (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) (Paperback)
I'm a fan of this series, and yet this installment took me by surprise. It has all the suspense and laughter you'd expect from a Whiskey Mattimoe mystery with Abra in fine form as the hilarious Bad Example at an Afghan hound show. But it also takes Whiskey's personal life in a shocking new direction. No spoiler here! Read it for yourself. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whiskey and Abra Steal the Show, October 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Whiskey with a Twist (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) (Paperback)
This book was as funny as I have learned to expect in this series. I do love Abra's situations she gets into, and not alone, mind you.

Abra with owner, Whiskey Mattimoe has been awarded the dubious honor of appearing in a dog show as the "Worst In Show." Jenx, the police chief thinks this would be an excellent way to have 'deputy' Mattimoe seek out the person or persons that are shooting at her guests from the dog show. Whiskey arrives at the Barnyard Inn and is chatting with a man when shots ring out again and there is a body.

Abra gets into all sorts of mischief and romantic entanglements which calls in the troops of Jeb, Chester, and others in a fast-pace, helicopter race through Indiana Amish Lands. Encounters with goats and champion Afgans keep the search going.

There is a surprise at the ending of the book that will catch your attention.

This was a great read!

2.0 out of 5 stars Whoes to like of the Cast???, December 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Whiskey with a Twist (The Whiskey Mattimoe Mysteries) (Paperback)
I loved the first two books of the 'Whiskey' series, but found this one disappointing. I believe stories are more interesting to keep reoccurring characters when the books are based on a series, even tho there were a few in this book. The cast in Whiskey with a Twist, lacked personality or likability. The repeated scene of who was next to have hugs & kisses behind 'the curtain' became dull and silly. I would give the ending to the book 3 stars, but it took a long time to get there! "NINA, keep Abra and Whiskey home in Magnet Springs!"
