Makes you grin so hard your eyes water.,

I heard this in a remote Scottish isle tea house. It makes me want to get on a table and dance a jig. This would be a sight since I don't know the first thing about jigs. This music may just inspire me to learn. The last time I had the experience of "wow this band could be huge if they got any air play," I was one of 25 people in a little bar in Minneapolis listening to Sheryl Crow.

I picked this up while visiting Scotland and have about worn the CD out. A totally different sound. Not only is the music great but I happened to run into the Fiddler, Ivan, in a pub on Skye. It was pleasure to meet him. I definitely recommend this one.

With a name like "Shooglenifty" it's gotta be good.,

I had the chance to hear this band live at the Vancouver Folk Festival in 1997. I cannot describe the uplifting feeling this music brings, but I will say that I saw a 90-year old woman jump right out of her chair and dance the jig when they came on stage. Their music is fast, complex, smooth and incredibly fun. Shooglenifty is one of the world's all-time greatest bands. Someday the world will recognize this, if only because listening to them makes you smile.

Seen the Shoogles in a small groovy place -- The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen -- many years back. They must have had the bass turned up, or maybe being within touching distance of them playing had an effect, but still not shaken the memories.
Tony B Liar must have had his equaliser set all wrong. Everything is really a buildup for bass-laden "Farewell to Nigg". If you long for more of not quite the same, try out Martyn Bennett, but be aware each album IS different.

Had the incredible pleasure of listening to them live at the Winnepeg Folk Festival 99 and had to get this. Truly a blast to listen to. Energy that is lacking in to many other outfits today.

This album is fantastic, a triumph, combining traditional Scottish music with the modern day demands of entertainment. I have seen the band live and can recommend it. Some songs seem to miss the boat, but generally very good.

Imagine if the Chieftains were 30 years younger, hung out in punk bars, and played with electric guitars. You'd have Shooglenifty. Not a bad album, the music is upbeat and lively, but not as much fun as I'd hoped. After all, Tony Blair is supposed to think these guys are great. Definitely worth a listen, but I don't think I'll be buying more. |
