Delightful, wonderful adventurous romantic suspense! The Whisper by Carla Neggers,
By
This review is from: The Whisper (Hardcover)
THE WHISPER by Carla Neggers is a delightful, adventurous, romantic suspense thriller set in modern day Ireland and America. It is well written with depth and details, It has alot of information in reference to ancient Irish folklore, legend and artifacts. It is the sequel to The Mist. It has romance, suspense, ancient rituals, forklore, legend, lost artifacts, adventure, intrigue and some sweet sensuality. It is about a diabolical screme using ancient Irish rituals to gain power and success. The hero is an Internal Affair officer, who was wounded a few months earlier due to a bomb blast. He is strong, intelligent, a force to reckon with and travels to Ireland to recuperate. The heroine is an archeologist who is out to find the truth, she was left for dead in a cave in Ireland. these two meet in Ireland by accident and there is love at first sight. They go back to the USA to their jobs, where fate or fairies are at work and put the two together. They together with the help of others find the truth. The secondary characters are just as inspiring. We see romance and love come together between several of the characters. this is a fast paced, page turning story. A must read and a keeper. I would recommend this book, especially if you enjoy intrigue, suspense, myth and legends. This book was received for review from Net Galley and details can be found at My Book Addiction and More and Mira Books.

What a muddled mess,

I have never been so lost while reading a book in my life. It was obvious by page 20 that this book was part of a series and that the author assumes that readers have read them in order. Details from past books cloud the first 50 pages (and frankly, are more interesting than the story at hand). There are so many characters floating in and out of the story that you need a score card to keep track of them. It jumps from Ireland to Boston (I was not aware that so many people from Boston seem to have a second home in Ireland).
I guess I could have gone back and read the first three novels, but frankly it was not interesting enough to warrant it, as I already want four hours of my life back. I was so confused with the storyline and trying to ascertain who was who, who was married to whom, what happened where, whose hair was a deeper shade of red, and whether or not I gave a care. I had to give up. I could not really tell you what this is about other than a muddled mess that I am shocked made it into a hard bound book. Thank goodness it was a vine offering and I did not waste $15 on it.

my favorite so far of the series,
By Laura B (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Whisper (Hardcover)
This is the 4th book in a series about the Boston PD/FBI and Ireland. The story picks up with Cyrus "Scoop" Wisdom recovering from a bomb blast that destroyed his home that he shares with fellow police officers Abigail Browning and Bob O'Reilly. He is in Ireland recovering and getting his thoughts together about who may be responsible for the bombing of his home. When he visits "Keira's" ruin (read The Angel), he meets beautiful and mysterious archeologist Sophie Malone. Scoop and Sophie's paths then begin to intertwine as fate seems to keep them together. There is more to Sophie than she lets on and Scoop is determined to find out what she is hiding.
This is a continuing story and if you have not read the previous 3 books (The Widow, The Angel, and The Mist) you will most certainly be lost. This is not a stand alone book, but each book contains a smaller story that does wrap up within the covers. It has been a couple of months since I read The Mist and I spent the first 1/3 of the book trying to recall some of the story to catch up and remember who did what and why. Although this book is classified as a "romantic suspense," the romance really is secondary to the whole story. As far as romances go, it is fine, but nothing exciting. The book's true worth is within the mystery of the story. This is actually my favorite of the series. The series has progressively improved with each book--the characters and story lines are more well developed and I actually like the characters more (I cannot stand Abigail at all). I liked both Scoop and Sophie and only wish I could have gotten to know them even more. Josie and Myles were also great characters and I only wish I could have gotten more into Myles's head and learned more about him. *I received this book from the publisher via netgalley for review*

In a word, this book was teeth-grindingly boring. There are too many characters, too much history and lead characters that we don't know enough about emotionally to care about. Don't waste your money.

Who Are These People?,

This is the fourth book in a series featuring Cyrus "Scoop" Wisdom. Unfortunately, I quickly ascertained that since I began the series with this book I was at a serious disadvantage. It seemed like the author simply assumed that the readers of this book had read the previous books in the series. Yes, she does tell us that Scoop was wounded when a bomb went off in/near his home and he was injured. But she doesn't explain why his home was bombed or why he chose to recuperate in Ireland. The book doesn't improve from that point.
As I read, I really wanted to like both Scoop and the other main character Sophie Malone, an archaeologist. But the author never made that possible. She doled out little tidbits about the character without giving the (new) reader enough to come to care for the character. As for the secondary characters, Neggars introduced them as if all her readers already knew them. Sadly, not all of us do. Neggars tells us that a serial killer may (or may not) be at large, may (or may not) have been trying to kill Sophie, and may or may not be responsible for her having been rescued from a cave, by a man, who is, presumably either American or maybe a Brit. If you're confused, you can imagine the reader's confusion in trying to figure out what was going on. Neggars continuously introduces characters, but they're like those throw-away characters on "Star Trek," you know, the new character on each episode who was introduced for no other reason than to die so the writers didn't have to kill off one of the on-going characters every week. It didn't take long before I figured out I should have been making a list of the characters and who they were involved with, and why they were even in the book. Truth be told, though, I don't want to work that hard to read a so-called thriller. Perhaps, this book would be more enjoyable if I had started with the first in the series. If that's true, there should be a warning given on the cover to that effect. I can't think of another book in a series that I've read that would need such a warning, but this one most definitely did.

I couldn't finish this book. I felt as if I was being slammed over the head repeatedly with a heavy object:
Here are some characters *slam* Here's how they met *slam* Did I mention their backstory? *slam* Here are some more characters *slam* Oh, let me reiterate the backstory in case you aren't getting it yet *slam* I used to just love Carla Neggers, but the last few books have been just tell, tell, tell, backstory, backstory, backstory. I'm sorry to say I won't bother with the next one. If you are thinking about reading this book, take it out of the library and try before you buy.

A sequal that was too forced,

I will be honest, I got this from th Vine program, and to all readers of reveiws who beleive Vine members don't post bad review, you should read more of mine. Here goes another bad reveiw, which destins me to get "unhelpful" votes. I didn't enjoy this book. I ordered it because I enjoyed "The Mist" so much and thought I would similarly enjoy this novel. In general it is a continuation of "The Mist" but for some reason I can't make myself finish it. It just seems too forced like the author really can't come up with a good story so the conversations seem off and story seems hokey. I literally just stopped ready it which is very unusual for me. For a basic storyline I am sure there are numerous reviewers who regurgitate all the facts from the book and I am not going to do that, but will only say that this mook deals with the fact that the bad guy from "The Mist" clearly had an accomplice and the characters are trying to piece together who it was. Since so much of the history is based on "The Mist" I would recommend reading it first, however I can't recommend reading the sequal. Most of time sequals dissapoint and this is a case where that was true for me at least.

powerful romantic suspense thriller,
This review is from: The Whisper (Hardcover)
The bomb in Ireland almost killed Boston detective Cyrus "Scoop" Wisdom. As he recuperates he meets archaeologist Sophie Malone, who had been left for dead in a cave filled with blood and lacking the ancient Celtic treasure, which brought her there. They are attracted to one another.
However, when he returns to Boston, Scoop searches for the bomber. When his prime suspect kills himself, he relooks at Sophie, who found the corpse hanging in a ritual suicide. She traced the missing treasure to Boston. Scoop looks deeper into the alleged suicide and begins to theorize the culprit faked a death while hoping his trust in Sophie proves right. With her help with interpreting the archaic clues, he begins anew his search for the bomber who tries to kill the woman he is falling in love with. Following up with the explosive The Mist, The Whisper is a powerful romantic suspense thriller starring two delightful lead protagonists who fell in love at first sight in an ancient Irish ruin. The story line is fast-paced throughout as each uses their detecting skills to search for a diabolical serial killer using ancient rituals to either conceal avarice or for something sinisterly arcane. Readers will enjoy accompanying the lead couple, as they argue, fuss and kiss during their suspenseful investigation. Harriet Klausner

The Whisper, by Carla Neggers
Very disappointed-had to make a list of the characters-by page 54 there were over 30. By page 165, I was so bored, that I had to read the end of the book. Editor, get a new job!

Too many characters, not enough story,
This review is from: The Whisper (Hardcover)
As mentioned, this is the latest in the FBI/BPD series. I was very disappointed in this book. All of the characters from previous books in the series are thrown in at random, most of the time with no discernible rhyme or reason. If you haven't read the previous books in the series, you should before reading this book. The story line is weak and the flow is constantly interrupted by back story and the appearance of other characters in the series. It seemed like the author was trying to tie off every story line from the previous books. I usually love Ms. Neggers work, but wish I had passed on this one. The Whisper is not up to Ms. Neggers usual writing quality.
